Luke 11:1-4
Luke 11:1-4
-it is the most repeated prayer, but we must be careful not just to repeat it
-barber Peter - Martin Luther - A Simple Way to Pray
-three portions of scripture: 10 commandments, apostles creed, Lord’s prayer
-these three can guide us in our seasons of prayer
-At the center of the prayer of the kingdom of God -Lord teach us to pray
-Lord teach us to pray - not for himself only, but on behalf of all the disciples
-When you pray say:
-He didn’t say when you pray, pray exactly this, instead pray like this, this is the model, the example
-Father
-What does it mean to speak to God as Father? The main use of Father in scripture, are used by those who are His children, those who have faith in His Son Jesus Christ
6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
1 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.
-sonship is only brought through redemption
-He is the Father of the redeemed
-What is He like?
-Matthews account reads - our Father in heaven
-not about His location, but the granduer of where He is, the majesty of God
-He is the only One who inhabits heaven by sovereign right - alistair begg
-all-powerful, all-knowing, ever-present, providential, when a sparrow falls to the ground He knows it, He knows every hair on your head, nothing happens without His permission
11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!
15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”
-What is the first priority that we should pray: that God’s name may be regarded as sacred and holy, with respect and reverence
-One cannot revere the name of God if he does not know God as his Father
Now what is the significance in His name?
-His name reveals who He is, we usually use names to distinguish between others, but the name of God describes His very character
-We live in a time when God’s name is more dishonored than honored. Any element of surprise or amazement, or disbelief you will hear someone say, “oh my God.”
-How about when we misuse the Lord’s name so we can get the approval of others. People will say, “The Lord told me to.” We must be very careful, that we do not mishandle the name of God. We should only say that phrase when it deals with the Word of God
11 it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.”
-So how do we hallow His name?
-When we worship, worship is not focused on ourselves but on God, the chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever
1 Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!
-What does our worship in hallowing God’s name have to do with prayer? Because when we come before God in worship, we should pray God I pray that this worship honors your name
-If we are redeemed, we know God as our Father, we have trusted in the grace shed for us on the cross in His Son, then we will sing to honor the name of God, and if that is not your desire to worship for the glory of God, then you must examine whether you are truly redeemed
-We also are to honor the name of God in how we live, in everything that we do
31 So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
-So when we pray, we pray that God’s name would be revered, would be honored, would be magnified, may we not jump to our requests without seeking for His name to receive glory
-With that in mind we are now going to pray that God’s name be hallowed, let us pray
