God’s Love

John 3:16 NASB95
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
Before creation God existed in the form of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The unity of love that they had and have is perfect. In their Godhead they are perfectly united. They seek the glory for one another. Though they are three in form they make up one God. It is difficult for us to understand the trinity because we have not experienced the perfect love that unites them as one.
John 17:1–5 (NASB95)
Jesus spoke these things; and lifting up His eyes to heaven, He said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You, even as You gave Him authority over all flesh, that to all whom You have given Him, He may give eternal life. “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. “I glorified You on the earth, having accomplished the work which You have given Me to do. “Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.
John 16:12–15 (NASB95)
“I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. “He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. “All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.
God deserves all glory and the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit seek to bring one another glory. They have no selfishness about them. They love one another unconditionally.
God created humanity out of desire and not necessity. He has perfect love and does not need us to add anything to His love. However, out of His goodness He desired for us to experience the type of love that He has. This is why he gave us a free will. It is in our free will that we are to experience the kind of love God has.
He created us in His image. Just as God is triune so are we. We are made up of body, soul and spirit. It is in our soul that our will exists. God has created within every soul the desire for love. That is why family and friends are so important in our lives. Our will has to have love! True love comes through a relationship with the Father through the Son, by the Holy Spirit.
Unfortunately, With the free will that God gave us to love Him, Satan perverted it and used it as an opportunity to introduce sin into the world. That sin prevents us from loving God with the love He wants us to experience. This brings us to our focal text.

Humanity’s Problem

Romans 5:12–14 (NASB95)
Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned— for until the Law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.
God intended for man to live in perfect love with Him through the free will that He gave us. Unfortunately, Man used that free will to rebel against God instead love loving God. We see this in Gen. 2:16-17
Genesis 2:16–17 (NASB95)
The Lord God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”
So God gave man the perfect environment with the perfect relationship. There was only one commandment. Don’t eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil! If you eat of it you will die.
So why did God even put the tree in the garden? It was so we could express our love for Him through obedience to Him. So How did we do?
Genesis 3:1–7 NASB95
Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?” The woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’ ” The serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! “For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings.
There are a couple of things I want us to notice. First, the commandment was given to Adam before Eve was created. Secondly, Adam did not communicate clearly enough to Eve. (God didn’t say he couldn’t touch it. He said you couldn’t eat it.) Thirdly, Adam was with Eve watching her being tempted and did nothing to stop it. Finally, he engaged in the sin that Eve engaged in when he saw her not die.
The sin that humanity committed was not eating a fruit. It was wanting something more than their relationship with God. They wanted to be like God. This is the same thing that happened to Satan. Is. 14:12-15
Isaiah 14:12–15 (NASB95)
“How you have fallen from heaven, O star of the morning, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the earth, You who have weakened the nations! “But you said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God, And I will sit on the mount of assembly In the recesses of the north. ‘I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’ “Nevertheless you will be thrust down to Sheol, To the recesses of the pit.
Unfortunately, every person from Adam now has this sin sick desire to be their own god. They want to set their own rules and have what they want when they want them. This is inherited sin that Romans says spread to all men. We all have a sin nature. We are not sinners because we sin, we sin because we are sinners.
The consequence of sin is death. Both physically and spiritually. Though Adam and Eve didn’t die physically immediately they did die spiritually. We see this in Gen. 3:8-12
Genesis 3:8–12 (NASB95)
They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. Then the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?” He said, “I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.” And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” The man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate.”
Adam and eve used to walk with God daily in the cool of the evening. When they sinned against God they were ashamed because the love relationship had been violated. God was not asking Adam where he was physically when he asked him,”Where are you?” He was asking him where he was relationally. God knew exactly where Adam was physically. He wanted Adam to see where he was spiritually. He wanted Adam to say he was sorry and repent of his sin. We see no indication that this ever happened. As a result God had to shed blood of animals to cover the shame of their nakedness.
This is a foreshadowing of why Christ had to die for us. He shed His blood to cover the shame of our sin. And just like Adam and Eve had to put on the garments to cover their shame, we have to put on the garments of Christ to cover our shame. The way we do this i s through repentance and faith. Rom. 13:14
Romans 13:14 NASB95
But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts.
We must die to self and live for Christ! He has made it possible.

Salvation Through Christ

Romans 5:15–21 NASB95
But the free gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many. The gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned; for on the one hand the judgment arose from one transgression resulting in condemnation, but on the other hand the free gift arose from many transgressions resulting in justification. For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ. So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men. For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous. The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Sin brought death to all men through one sin. The gift of God is to remove death from man and re-establish the love relationship with Man that sin took away.
This happens through justification. God removes the sin that prohibits us from loving him and gives us life again to love Him. 2 Cor. 5:17
2 Corinthians 5:17 NASB95
Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
The old person that was tainted by the curse of sin has been put to death in Christ. 2 Cor. 5:21
2 Corinthians 5:21 NASB95
He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Not only did He remove the curse of sin, but He gave us righteousness to live in relationship with God.
You see the Law was given not so that we could live perfectly to it. It was given to show us that we can’t. Because we can’t we need a Savior. God sent Jesus His Son to be our Savior.
This means that When Jesus is our Lord and Savior, He gives us everlasting life! You know we look forward to many things about heaven. We look forward to seeing those who have past on before us. We look forward to the pearly gates, streets of gold, and the mansions. We look forward to the new bodies without sorrow, pain, or death. But I would encourage you to consider looking forward to the ability to love Jesus the way He intended us to when He first created man.
If you do not have a relationship with Jesus, that can change this morning! you can begin your journey with Him today. He loves you just the way you are but loves you too much to keep you the way you are. Rom. 5:8-9
Romans 5:8–9 (NASB95)
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.
He wants to forgive you of your sin, save your soul from everlasting death, and give you everlasting life! The only thing it will cost you is the entirety your life! Matt. 16:24
Matthew 16:24 NASB95
Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.
