let’s stand
Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife, because she was barren; and the Lord answered him and Rebekah his wife conceived.
But the children struggled together within her; and she said, “If it is so, why then am I this way?” So she went to inquire of the Lord.
For God’s children, there is a conflict within us
I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.
The Lord said to her, “Two nations are in your womb; And two peoples will be separated from your body; And one people shall be stronger than the other; And the older shall serve the younger.”
Two nations are in your womb
She is having twins
yet each twin will be the ancestor of two nations
these twins are the same but different
they represent two different nations/kingdoms
we have two natures that represent two different kingdoms
kingdom of this world
kingdom of heaven
One people shall be stronger than the other
in this struggle there are no ties
one side will always be winning/stronger
which one of your natures is winning
the older shall serve the younger
your flesh is your old nature
your spirit man in your new nature
Old Nature was born before New Man
The flesh is supposed to serve the spirit
come under order
come under discipline
can’t deny the flesh
people try to deny that it is wrong/lustful
expressing myself
being powerful
taking control
your lust is out of control, and you want to be given an excuse
people try to deny the struggles
deny the temptations
I’m strong enough to flirt - no, you’re not
I’m strong enough to just hang out
and that gets you into more trouble
but it must be subdued
that’s what God told Cain
even though old man has a head start
Contrast in Character
Esau was red and hairy
Jacob grabbed his brother’s heel and his name mans supplanting
The spirit is supposed to supplant the flesh
Clash in Character
Esau cunning hunter
Nimrod was called a skillful hunter too
Esau was a man of the field - man of the world
Jacob was peaceful or plain man
Jacob dwelled in tents (Like Abraham)
Isaac loved Esau for fleshly reasons
but Rebekah simply loved Jacob - loved him because he was her child
Esau played but Jacob prepared
Esau came in from the field faint - playing in the field - didn’t bring food home
Jacob prepared a portion of food
Esau felt entitled to what Jacob had. . . have not prepared but give me some anyway
Jacob paid (with the stew) for what Esau had
Esau despised the birthright
birthright
“But he shall acknowledge the firstborn, the son of the unloved, by giving him a double portion of all that he has, for he is the beginning of his strength; to him belongs the right of the firstborn.
Now the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel (for he was the firstborn, but because he defiled his father’s bed, his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph the son of Israel; so that he is not enrolled in the genealogy according to the birthright. Though Judah prevailed over his brothers, and from him came the leader, yet the birthright belonged to Joseph),
rights - double portion of father’s inheritance
responsibilities - spiritual leader, carry on family lineage, next head of the family
and in this case, the blessing from Abraham
Esau despised the responsibilities
apparently Jacob had already seen signs that Esau despised his birthright
Then he said, “Is he not rightly named Jacob, for he has supplanted me these two times? He took away my birthright, and behold, now he has taken away my blessing.” And he said, “Have you not reserved a blessing for me?”
that there be no immoral or godless person like Esau, who sold his own birthright for a single meal. For you know that even afterwards, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought for it with tears.
if you flesh runs teh day, it will ruin the day
For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
