1 Kings 18:41-45
INTRODUCTION: When Elijah told Ahab that there was "a sound of abundance of rain" there had as yet been no sound audible to the human ear.
I. IT WAS A PRAYER OF FAITH, FOR IT RESTED UPON GOD'S OWN SURE PROMISE
It is very important when we pray to make sure that our petition is founded upon the promise of God and that we are therefore praying in accordance with the will of God. Why did Elijah need to pray for rain if it was God's will to send it? Because God had ordained it thus. where the Lord promises to do a great many things, and then in He says that He will do these things in answer to prayer.
II. IT WAS A PRAYER OFFERED IN THE SECRET PLACE, AWAY FROM THE NOISE AND DISTRACTIONS OF THE WORLD
See what verse 42 says. What a relief it must have been for Elijah to get alone in the presence of God after all the noise and excitement that he had experienced! Psalm 46:10.Be still and know that I am GOD I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. But there is more for us to note here. Let us remember the word of the Lord Jesus as recorded in Matthew 6:6. But thou, when thou prayers, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shutet thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seethe in secret shall reward thee openly
III. IT WAS A PRAYER THAT WAS MARKED BY DEEP REVERENCE AND SINCERE HUMILITY
Look at verse 42. In the earlier part of the chapter we see Elijah standing amid the crowds on Carmel; but now we see the him before his God, down low before Him, down upon the earth with his face between his knees.
IV. IT WAS A PRAYER THAT WAS DEFINITE AND TO THE POINT
He only had one petition as he came before the Lord. It was just this—"Lord, send the rain!" Surely the whole emphasis is that our prayers should be definite, and that definite, specific prayers bring definite, specific answers.
V. IT WAS A PRAYER THAT PRESERVED UNTIL THE ANSWER CAME
Elijah said to his servant, "Go again, and again, and again—seven time";—"and it came to pass in the meanwhile, that the Heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain."
