And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.
Intro: I thank the Lord that as we study His word we can know Him! The Lord uses John to record this description of Himself for us to understand and know Him. I thank the Lord that in His infinite wisdom He chose words to describe Himself, that not only help us picture what John is seeing, but also that teaches us a great Biblical truth. In studying the book of Revelation and the glory of Christ I have noticed something that is quit remarkable. I have found myself each week studying the entire Bible. That is simply because He is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending!
His Mouth:
By the word of the Lord were the heavens made;
And all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.
Just think for a moment of the tremendous power of our Lord’s word. He spoke, and the world that we know and love, appeared at the sound of His voice! The power that was behind creation is the same power that sacrificed a Saviour, saves sinners, sanctifies saints, will one day slaughter Satan and all the enemies of our great God!
But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips;
I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.
For the Lord giveth wisdom:
Out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.
So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth:
It shall not return unto me void,
But it shall accomplish that which I please,
And it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
The Sword: A sword is an instrument of ___________________:
Are there really any other good reasons for someone to carry a sword other than for battle? ___________. The Bible gives us clear understanding that there is a battle raging each and every day that has been going on for roughly 600 years.. It is a battle that will one day come to an end by way of a sharp twoedged sword.
(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
Since there is a spiritual battle going on, there is a need for spiritual weapon! The Bible also is clear as to what that weapon is.
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
Notice how we just used the word of God to see Christ as John sees Him with a sharp twoedged sword protruding out of His mouth; seeing that sword as a weapon of war, then establishing it as a spiritual weapon for use in a spiritual war, and then finally defining it as the sword of the Spirit, which is the ________________ of God.
We have talked before about Moses and Peter, trying to fight a spiritual battle using physical means. King David as a young man was one who understood that the battle was much bigger than the one giant standing before him. 1 Samuel 17:48-53
Notice what He said in verse 47 And all the assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear: (physical) for the battle is the LORD’s, and he will give you into our hands. (spiritual) The victory was not through a physical sword, but through David’s trust in the power of that spiritual sword!
The Bible gives us glimpses of the raging spiritual battle that takes place in the unseen.
Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.
What weapon did Michael use against the devil? _____________________________________________________________________________________.
It is the same sword that Jesus used when He was tempted in the wilderness by the devil when He was victorious over the devil. Mt. 4:4
The Sword of the Spirit ______________, but then ______________________: (The sword used against the heart of men:)
Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
When they heard that, they were cut to the heart, and took counsel to slay them.
When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth.
A few questions to consider concerning the use of a sword: How much power is there in a sword that never comes out of its sheath? How good is a sword, if the person wielding it has never used one before? How much irreversible harm can someone inflict on another because of the improper use of a sword?
These men were not pricked and cut by the men that wielded the sword, but by the sword itself! When we take a moment and consider the physical aspects here. There is nothing enjoyable about getting cut by a sword… The same is true spiritually, the word of God has the power to prick and cut the heart of a man. It brings them first to salvation through conviction, and then once saved, it uses that same process to bring them to sanctification.
Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write; These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges;
Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.
(Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
The word quick here isn’t referring to the speed in which it is swung, but the fact that it is alive! The word of God divides, as it cuts the heart of men, we either have to succumb to its truth, or we reject it wholly. Sadly people die every day in this world, that have been cut by the sword, but never healed by it. By there own choosing, they die in their sins, only to one day stand before Christ in His glory at the great white throne judgment and receive my final judgment by the very Word that they rejected.
He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.
The Sword of the Spirit _________________, but then brings _____________!
And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:
And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
