1. TIMELINE – PT 2
In 70 AD, Jerusalem was razed to the ground by the Romans and the temple burned, just like Jesus said it would.
A final uprising in 132 AD
The jews were fighting against Rome, trying to win back their land
The Jews were finally defeated and the Jewish nation was disappeared.
Roman Emperor Hadrian
a. made it a crime for any Jew to enter the city.
b. He also renamed the entire province ‘Palestine,’ as an insult to the Jews, because it means Philistines, the Jews’ ancient enemy. (Mosaic curses!)
Jews start to immigrate to Israel
1,749 years later a small amount of Jews began to emigrate to Israel in 1881
The land was sparsly populated and basically undeveloped from ancient times.
(Mosaic curses!)
A. Prophecies that Israel would come back to life
1. Isaiah spoke of a second and future return …
Isaiah 11:11-13
(NIV) In that day the Lord will reach out his hand a second time to reclaim the surviving remnant of his people from Assyria, from Lower Egypt, from Upper Egypt, from Cush (Sudan), from Elam (S. Iran), from Babylonia, from Hamath and from the islands of the Mediterranean. 12 He will raise a banner for the nations and gather the exiles of Israel; he will assemble the scattered people of Judah from the four quarters of the earth. 13 Ephraim’s(N. Kingdom) jealousy will vanish, and Judah’s (S. Kingdom) enemies will be destroyed….
Not just from Assyria or Babylon, but from the north, west, south –the four corners of the earth!
4. And Ezekiel prophesied the same thing!
Ezekiel 37:2, 5, 11-12 (NIV)
I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry … 5This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life. …11Then he said to me: “Son of man, these bones are the people of Israel. They say, ‘Our bones are dried up and our hope is gone; we are cut off.’ 12Therefore prophesy and say to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: My people, I am going to open your graves and bring you up from them; I will bring you back to the land of Israel.
6. And 40 years before Israel would be destroyed by the Romans and dispersed for 1900 years, Jesus predicted their return!
Luke 21:24 (BSB)
And Jerusalem will be trodden down by the Gentiles, UNTIL the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
8. Jesus said Jerusalem would cease to exist as a geopolitical entity UNTIL the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
THEN, she would exist again!
10. So, how did God do it?!
First: pogroms in Russia
1827 Russian Czar, Nicholas I declared he would either convert the Jews to Russian orthodoxy, drive them out, or kill them through conscription.
The assassination of Czar Alexander II, the son of Nicholas I, in 1881 was blamed on the Jews, which ignited the Kiev (Ukraine) POGROMS
Pogrom Definition
an organized massacre of a particular ethnic group, in particular that of Jewish people in Russia or eastern Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
So, they fled from Russia, many to America, and some to Palestine.
Second: Theodor Herzl (1860-1904)
1894 – A Jewish reporter from Vienna covered a story in France about a Jewish soldier in France, falsely put on trial because he was Jewish.
A wave of antisemitism ensued.
He had a vision that the future of the Jewish people was in their own land, as a nation again.
He started a movement called Zionism, which simply means the Jewish people have a right to go back to their land in Zion.
1897 – He convened the first Zionist Congress in Basel, Switzerland, towards the rebuilding of a nation that didn’t even exist.
He made a prophecy, saying, “Whether now or in 50 years, it will happen!”
In 1947, 50 years later exactly, the UN voted for it!
8. When Herzl was a boy he had a dream at night. He said he saw Messiah.
And then one night I had a wonderful dream. The King-Messiah came, a glorious and majestic old man, took me in his arms, and swept me on the wings of the wind. On one of the shining clouds we encountered the figure of Moses ....The Messiah called to Moses: ‘It is for this child that I have prayed!’ And to me he said: ‘Go and declare to the Jews that I shall come soon and perform great wonders and great deeds for my people and for the whole world!
Third: General Edmund Allenby (1861-1936)
In the years leading up to this, the British empire had gone through a revival.
They loved the Bible and the Jewish people.
They studied prophecies that the Jewish people would return to the land!
A little English boy, who was taught to pray by his mother, always ended his prayers with a prayer for the people of Jesus: “And Lord, restore your ancient people back to their homeland.”
He grew up, joined the army, rose through the ranks and became general of the British army.
His name was General Edmund Allenby.
In WWI the one the British put in charge of taking the land of Palestine from the Turkish Empire was General Allenby, the boy who had prayed for Israel!
Allenby carried with him a Bible which he used to plan his strategy.
As he neared the land, the Muslim fighters surrendered.
They had mistaken his name “Allenby,” for “Allah nabi,” which meant, “prophet of Allah,” who was bringing judgment.
So, they surrendered.
Britain was in control of Palestine now.
1917 – Lord Balfour UK Foreign Secretary,
wrote a letter called the Balfour Declaration, stating that the British Empire favored a Jewish homeland in Palestine.
And so, the British empire opened up Palestine to Jewish emigrees.
Fifth: Rising tide of antisemitism in Europe
In WWII, the holocaust engulfed Europe, killing 6 million Jews.
Meanwhile, British foreign policy shifted against the Jews, because Britain didn’t want to offend the Arabs.
So, they blockaded Holocaust survivors from entering Palestine!
It was a public relations disaster for the British, and soon after, the British decided to hand over Palestine to a new body called the UN!
In Nov 1947, almost 50 years to the time Herzl said it would happen, the UN took up a vote to partition the land between Arab and Jew.
The Jews accepted the partition, but the Arab nations didn’t!
Because the Soviets (Israel’s archenemy) wanted the British out, Stalin ordered the satellite countries to vote for the Jews to gain nationhood!
33 nations voted for a resolution to divide Palestine into Jewish and Arab states in May 1948
ONLY GOD!!!
Sixth: Harry Truman
In WWII American President Franklin Roosevelt assured Saudi Arabia that the USA wouldn’t let anything happen in Israel unless approved by the Arab nations.
Had Roosevelt lived, he might have said no to Israeli statehood.
(1945), Roosevelt died.
The year before he died he chose a new vice president, Harry Truman.
Harry Truman was president of the USA when David Ben Gurion declared Israel a nation on May 14, 1948.
The American state department advised Truman NOT to endorse the proclamation, as it would bring trouble.
Even his Secretary of State, George Marshall, said that he would oppose Truman and resign.
Eddie Jacobson.
A Jewish friend of Truman’s
Truman endorsed the declaration of Israel being a nation
Seventh: Israeli War of Independence 1948
While Israel accepted the UN partition, the Arabs in Palestine and in the surrounding Arab states rejected it.
May 15, the day after the proclamation, the 5 nations of Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, & Iraq, invaded the land to annihilate Israel!
The secretary General of the Arab League declared their intention: “This will be a war of extermination.”
The Jewish Haganah only had 18,000 fighters who had no combat experience.
While the Arabs had arms, an arms embargo was placed on Israel, and they could only smuggle in old weapons.
They had no cannons or tanks.
On the eve of the war, the chief of operations, Egal Yadin, told Ben Gurion that they had only a 50-50 chance of surviving.
And by a miracle they survived 10 months of fierce fighting!
Immigration after war....
Thousands of Jewish refugees migrated from around the world back to their homeland.
They rebuilt ancient cities, and deserts began to bloom.
The greatest prophetic fulfillment of modern times happened before our eyes.
Prophetic Sign that Jesus will return
Matthew 23:39 (NIV)
For I tell you (Jerusalem), you will not see me again UNTIL you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”
Jesus said Israel has to be in the land in order for Him to return!
Conclusion
God’s Covenenat will stand
15 Remember his covenant forever— the commitment he made to a thousand generations. 16 This is the covenant he made with Abraham and the oath he swore to Isaac. 17 He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree, and to the people of Israel as a never-ending covenant: 18 “I will give you the land of Canaan as your special possession.”
The covenants said it would happen;
The prophets said it;
Jesus said it;
The apostles said it!
Israel has been at war 11 times since 1948
8. Lesson: God orchestrated the events of Joseph’s life,
As bad as it seemed, in order to give birth to Israel, so you could be saved.
As bad as circumstances are in your life right now, God is orchestrating them in your life as well – and for His purposes.
If His eye is on the sparrow, it’s definitely on you too! Trust Him!
