Romans 6:1-14
We learned in chapter 5 of Romans that God’s grace covers and abounds over all our sin. The more sin we have the more God’s grace is shown to abound.
Paul jumps ahead of his attackers by answering the question before they ask it, “if this is true, shouldn’t we seen more and more so that God’s grace abounds more and more?”
The answer: God forbid
Why is this such an easy answer for Paul?
The answer comes from the relationship that has come about in our reconciliation with Christ in salvation
The New Man should not Live in Sin (2-5)
The New Man should not Live in Sin (2-5)
The old man has died and been buried through the work of Christ
It is no longer our identity to live a life of sin
After I got married, it no longer made sense to live like a bachelor
The new man is being prepared for a resurrection into the glory of God
Like a seed being placed in the ground we are made for so much more than staying in the dirt (1 Corinthians 15:35-38)
Even though we have not come into this resurrection yet we are walking towards it in newness of life
With a new and greater purpose
Like Christ in death, like Christ in glory
The New Man should not Serve Sin (6-10)
The New Man should not Serve Sin (6-10)
The old man is freed from the dominion of sin
We are no longer a slave to sin
The new man is given the power to serve and live for God
We were separated from him but now have been brought into relationship with him
We have a new master that we live to serve and please
The New Man should not Yield to Sin
The New Man should not Yield to Sin
The old man must be reckoned dead each and every day
The only power the old man has is that which we have given him
We do not want to yield our bodies as an instrument of unrighteousness for sin
The new man is empowered to become a instrument of righteousness
This happens when we yield ourselves to God. He is our source of life and righteousness
We are under grace, God’s forgiveness and righteousness imputed to us so that we can live a life pleasing to him
