This Week’s Theme: Put on the Christian Armor
Word for the Week is Faith: It is a constant outlook of trust towards God, whereby human beings abandon all reliance on their own efforts and put their full confidence in him, his word and his promises.
Memory verse: 1 Thessalonians 5:8 But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation.
Essence of the Text in a Sentence: Paul concluded his relationship instructions to the saints at Ephesus by calling them to let the Lord strengthen them to represent Christ.
Sermon Proposition: You are called, as saints, to allow Christ to strengthen you in faith and practice.
Sermon Objective: I want those in attendance to allow Christ to have His way in their life by judging whether they are continually surrendering to Christ’s Lordship and His power.
Sermon Text: Ephesians 6:10
10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.
INTRODUCTION: LISTEN TO THE INSTRUCTIONS PAUL WROTE TO THE SAINTS IN EPHESUS. I MUST WARN YOU IN ADVANCE THAT YOU MAY FEEL A LITTLE
WIVES
22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.
23 For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body.
24 Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything.
HUSBANDS
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her,
28 So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself.
29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church.
After hearing these commands of God for marriage, I have seen married Christians for years respond with a sense of inability. They have responded with phrases that don’t send hope to others but rather reek with despair.
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
2 “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise:
SLAVES OR EMPLOYEES
5 Bondservants, be obedient to those who are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in sincerity of heart, as to Christ;
6 not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart,
7 with goodwill doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men,
8 knowing that whatever good anyone does, he will receive the same from the Lord, whether he is a slave or free.
MASTERS OR BOSSES
9 And you, masters, do the same things to them, giving up threatening, knowing that your own Master also is in heaven, and there is no partiality with Him.
After hearing God’s instructions for submitting to your boss or your supervisor
10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.
I. SURRENDER TO HIM
I. SURRENDER TO HIM
10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.
EXPLAIN: Finally, my brethren,
be strong in the Lord
THE WORD TRANSLATED BE STRONG IS A COMBINATION OF two Greek words “en” and “dunamoo” TO STRENGTHEN.
THIS WORD MEANS
TO MAKE STRONG OR TO BECOME ABLE TO DO SOMETHING
Same word use in Philippians 4:13
CHRIST MAKES YOU STRONG ENOUGH TO ENDURE
PAUL ALSO USED THE WORD IN
17 But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me, so that the message might be preached fully through me, and that all the Gentiles might hear. Also I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.
THE LORD MADE PAUL ABLE TO PREACH THE GOSPEL CLEARLY.
19 and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power
16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man,
BEING STRONG IS NOT SOMETHING YOU DO BUT SOMETHING THAT IS DONE TO YOU
PAUL COMMANDED THE EPHESIAN SAINTS TO ALLOW THE LORD TO MAKE THEM STRONG
HE COMMANDED THEM TO SURRENDER TO THE STRENGTHENING OF THEM
BECAUSE CHRISTIANS ARE FOUND IN CHRIST, HE POWER IS AVAILABLE TO THEM.
His authority not in their authority
Authority Over NATURE
Luke 8:25 (KJV)
25 And he said unto them, Where is your faith? And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! for he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him.
Authority OVER DEATH
Authority OVER SIN
Authority OVER SICKNESS
His abilities not in their abilities
Ask Daniel who was in the lion’s den, ask Shadrach Meshach and Abendego Ask the Disciples that were in Jail, ask Paul and Silas, They will tell you He is Able to set free
ILLUSTRATION: PAUL UNDERSTOOD
20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
APPLICATION: SOME OF YOU MAY HAVE HAD THE WRONG THINKING WHEN YOU ARRIVED. YOU HAVE BEEN TRYING TO MUSTER UP AND MAKE YOURSELF STRONG. YOU HAVE BEEN TRYING THE LIVE THE CHRISTIAN LIFE IN YOUR OWN STRENGTH WITH LITTLE OR NO SUCCESS. TODAY I NEED YOU TO SURRENDER TO THE LORD ALLOW HIM TO MAKE YOU STRONG.
WILL YOU SURRENDER LIKE THE PSALMIST AND SAY Psalm 119:116 Uphold me according unto thy word, that I may live: and let me not be ashamed of my hope.
WILL YOU
RECOGNIZE THAT YOU NEED HIM
WILL YOU
RECOGNIZE YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW TO LIVE THIS CHRISTIAN LIFE AND SAY LIKE THE PSALMIST
Psalm 119:133 (Order) Direct my steps by Your word, And let no iniquity have dominion over me.
ALLOW GOD TO HAVE HIS WAY
SUBMIT AND SURRENDER TO THE COMMANDS OF GOD.
II. SURRENDER TO HIS POWER
II. SURRENDER TO HIS POWER
10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.
and in the power [denotes the presence and significance of force or strength rather than its exercise]
(His truth, His righteousness, His good news, His salvation, His Spirit)
of His might (power that is a part of God’s character).
THE SAME POWER THAT
19 and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power
20 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places,
ILLUSTRATION: IN 1 Samuel 30 DAVID AND HIS BAND OF MEN LEFT ZIGLAG THEIR HOME AND RETURNED TO FIND THEIR HOMES IN ASHES. THEIR WIVES, CHILDREN, AND POSESSIONS
6 Now David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God.
HOW?
7 Then David said to Abiathar the priest, Ahimelech’s son, “Please bring the ephod here to me.” And Abiathar brought the ephod to David.
8 So David inquired of the Lord, saying, “Shall I pursue this troop? Shall I overtake them?” And He answered him, “Pursue, for you shall surely overtake them and without fail recover all.”
WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM DAVID?
REMEMBERED THE WORD OF GOD
REMEMBERED THE WORD OF GOD
12 “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul,
13 and to keep the commandments of the Lord and His statutes which I command you today for your good?
REVERENCE THE LORD
REVERENCE THE LORD
12 “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul,
RESPOND TO THE LORD
RESPOND TO THE LORD
DAVID REMEMBERED THE ABILITIES OF GOD
HE KNOWS ALL SO HE NEEDED LOOK TO HIM
DAVID REMEMBERED GOD’S INSTRUCTIONS
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding;
6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.
HE CONTROLS ALL SO HE NEEDED LEAN ON HIM
DAVID REMEMBERED THAT THE LORD SAID IN
8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye.
12 “So I will strengthen them in the Lord, And they shall walk up and down in His name,” Says the Lord.
PUT ON THE WHOLE ARMOR OF GOD
PUT ON THE WHOLE ARMOR OF GOD
11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Put on (compound word [in and to sink]: to enter or put on) Metaphorically meaning to clothe or to furnish with power) the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
STAND
STAND
14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness
Ephesians 6:14–18 “14 Stand therefore,
having girded your waist with truth,
having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15
and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints—”
