Sometimes it can feel like Jesus is never going to come back. That's how people felt already just 30 years after Jesus' ascension, so Peter wrote to them to encourage them that God's slowness (as they saw it) was actually good news. It was good news because it meant that God was patient with them, and because it meant that God had a purpose for them.
