2 “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Though you are little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, From everlasting.”
Jeremiah 31:15 NKJV
15 Thus says the Lord: “A voice was heard in Ramah, Lamentation and bitter weeping, Rachel weeping for her children, Refusing to be comforted for her children, Because they are no more.”
Hosea 11:1 NKJV
1 “When Israel was a child, I loved him, And out of Egypt I called My son.
Beyond Christmas: Prophecy, Promise and Purpose.
Beyond the story of Christmas, God continue to fulfill prophecies in keeping His promises to accomplish His purpose.
Talk about prophecy.. foretelling of future events
prophecy in our time, a lot of false prophets have emerged, there are still so-called prophets on Youtube.
Do not despise prophecies - 1 Thessalonians 5 but test all things.
Seek the Spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy 1 Corinthians 14
While there is prophecy in the form of forthtelling, when we preach from God’s word there is a forthtelling from God’s word of prophecies that were already fulfilled and prophecies that are yet to happen.
There are around 300 general prophecies in the Old Testament about Jesus.
There are 109 specific prophecies in the Old Testament about the birth and the ministry of Jesus.
Talk of how the odds become astronomical that these prophecies become fulfilled in one man. (Use Philip as an example..)
Three prophecies fulfilled in Jesus’ birth.
Prophecy of the Virgin Birth.
Prophecy of the place of Jesus’ birth.
Prophecy of the massacre of the innocents.
The big idea from these three prophecies is:
BIG IDEA: God sent a Savior, Jesus our Lord and King to rule in our hearts and shine His light over this dark world.
Among the gospel writers, Matthew wrote to the Jewish audience.. so in documenting the birth of Jesus, Matthew was careful to connect the events with specific prophecies in the Old Testament.
The prophecy of the Virgin Birth.
Matthew 1:22 NKJV
22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying:
Matthew 1:23 NKJV
23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”
Talk of the need for Jesus to be born of a virgin..
100% man, 100% God
Romans 5:12 NKJV
12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—
No trace of Adam, Jesus did not inherit the sinful nature
The Virgin birth reveals God’s salvation plan.
Romans 5:18 NKJV
18 Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life.
2. The Prophecy of the place of Jesus’ birth.
Going to Matthew (this is long)
Matthew 2:1 ESV
1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem,
Matthew 2:2 ESV
2 saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”
It is important to note that this is also a fulfillment of prophecy..
“I see him but not now,
I behold him, but not near.
A star will come out of Jacob, a sceptre will rise out of Israel...” (Numbers 24:17a)
Matthew 2:3–4 ESV
3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.
Matthew 2:5–6 NKJV
5 So they said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the prophet: 6 ‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, Are not the least among the rulers of Judah; For out of you shall come a Ruler Who will shepherd My people Israel.’ ”
Luke 2:11 NKJV
11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
(shepherds field)
Matthew 1:1 NKJV
1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham:
To David was promised an offspring..
The place of Jesus’ birth depicts the royalty of Jesus.
Jesus is the Messiah!
Yeshua A’ Meshiach!
Genesis 49:10 NKJV
10 The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor a lawgiver from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes; And to Him shall be the obedience of the people.
In the book of Revelation, Jesus is called the King of kings and Lord of Lords.
Jesus said I am the root and offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star!
Why is it important? He is worthy of our worship. Surrender. Our entire beings. (talk)
If you haven’t done so, give your life to Jesus today.
3. Prophecy of the massacre of the innocents.
So continuing with Matthew..
Matthew 2:9–10 NKJV
9 When they heard the king, they departed; and behold, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came and stood over where the young Child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy.
Matthew 2:11–12 NKJV
11 And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12 Then, being divinely warned in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed for their own country another way.
The massacre of the innocents represents the dark world to which the light of Jesus came.
It also represents the groans of mankind over the evil of this world.
What happened in Israel on October 7. Why is there so much evil in the world.
For the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs..
Romans 8:22–25 NKJV
22 For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. 23 Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body. 24 For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance.
HOPE
What the angels said “Peace on earth and goodwill to men” is really very ironic.
Peace on earth points to the future reign of the Messiah.
Isaiah 9:6 NKJV
6 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Talk peace on earth, peace of God (subjective peace), peace with God (objective peace)
With God...
Promises Made. Promises Kept.
I’ll add one more promises guaranteed. --- MARANATHA!
