Thank you all again for coming to...
Pay your respects to Kirsten
Honor and Support her Family.
And before we commit her mortal body to the grave...
…let’s go to the Lord, once again… in prayer.
Pray
When Adam sinned in the garden...
…he brought the judgment of death...
…upon himself, and all of his posterity.
The Lord told him this:
Genesis 3:17–19 (ESV)
17 . . . “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life;
18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field.
19 By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
And from that very time...
…All who lived under Adam’s headship...
…suffered under the weight...
...of the righteous judgment...
…that was upon him
But thousands of years later...
...the prophet Daniel was told...
…that a day would come, when...
Daniel 12:2 (ESV)
2 ...many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth (would) awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.
And it was a great mystery...
…for centuries to come...
…how the great power of sin and death...
…would be overcome.
-You see, in order for that to happen...
…A new and greater Adam...
…would have to come.
A New Covenant Head...
…who would stand in Adam’s place...
…and do what no son of Adam had ever done:
Conquer the power of death...
…by the power of a sinless life!
-Jesus, is of course, that New Adam.
Through his...
Sinless Life
Substitutionary Death
Triumphant Resurrection...
…he has defeated the power of sin and death…
And in his HUMANITY...
…he has firmly established...
...his Lordship and Sovereignty over it!
He said this in John 5...
John 5:26–29 (ESV)
26 ...as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.
27 And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man.
28 Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice
29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.
-This is why we bury our dead...
…the way we do.
It’s not just a tradition.
We do it in acknowledgment of the fact...
…that Christ has been victorious...
…and will one day raise all men...
…to appear before his throne of righteous judgment.
-And so we return the bodies of our loved ones...
…back to the ground from which they came.
But, not to discard their mortal remains...
…but to plant them, like a seed...
…with full confidence, that...
…Christ, who is Lord of both the living and the dead...
…will one day break the hold of death and the grave...
…and summon them to appear before his glorious throne.
-The Apostle John was given the privilege...
…of foreseeing that great day of final judgment.
He records it in Revelation 20.
Revelation 20:11–21:8 (ESV)
11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them.
12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done...
-And family, we may not have...
…all the answers that we’d like to have...
And we may not have all of the...
closure
assurance
…that we desire.
But, there’s one thing that we do have...
…that ought to bring us comfort.
We have the firm assurance, that...
The Judge of all the Earth...
…WILL do what is right
We can trust and hope in Him...
In who He is.
He is:
Good
Compassionate
Holy
Righteous
Just...
…And he will, in the end, make all things right.
Psalm 96 says this:
Psalm 96:11–13 (ESV)
11 Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
12 let the field exult, and everything in it! …
13 … for he comes, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness, and the peoples in his faithfulness.
Let’s Pray again.
