The Summary: “The Birth of Jesus” (vs. 18-19)

Jesus (v. 19)
Now- Matthew has just walked through history from Abraham to Jesus. Now he brings the readers back to the immediate history that some may have even witnessed.
The birth of
Jesus Christ
took place in this way- take a minute and let that sink in, the birth of the eternal second person of the triune God, Jesus…God subjects himself to the human experience of “being born”.
Mary (vs. 18-19)
When- another key reference to time.
His mother Mary-the wording of Matthew is very intentional
had been betrothed to Joseph- the “betrothal period” is a real thing
Before they came together- this is referring to the sexual union of the marriage
she was found to be with child
from the Holy Spirit- what?!?!
Joseph (v. 19)
and her husband Joseph
being a just man-
and unwilling to put her to shame
resolved to divource her quietly

The Situation: “The Dream of Joseph” (vs. 20-23)

A (vs.)
But- Praise the LORD for the “Buts” in Scripture!
as he considered these things- the things mentioned above,
before coming together she was found with child
he resolved to divource her quietly
an angel of the Lord appeared to him
in a dream
saying
B (vs.)
Joseph, son of David
do not fear
to take Mary as your wife
for that which is conceived in her
is from the Holy Spirit
She will bear a son
and you shall call his name Jesus
for he will save his people from their sins
C (vs.)
All this took place to fulfill
what the Lord has spoken by the prophet
“Behold
The virgin shall conceive and bear a son
and they shall call his name Immanuel
which means, God with us” (Isa. 7:14)
