14 So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, “Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life.
15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”
We have begun Christmas season where we get the opportunity to learn about Jesus, read about Jesus, and the world has the opportunity to worship Jesus. You know what the best way to know about Jesus? It’s by reading His Autobiography. We started our service by reading this portion of Scripture right here. It may not make much sense that we are reading some Scripture in Genesis during Christmas times after all, we get together to read about how Jesus was born or we read about Jesus Himself.
Like I said right before The best way to know Jesus is by reading His Autobiography and when we approach the Bible there are 2 things you and I must do when we read it. We must believe that it is true and that it is one big story. While the Bible itself is separated into 66 books, each book is a sequel to the one that was before it and when we read it we must be able to find Jesus in every page.
Have you ever seen a page out of the i spy book called where’s waldo? In every page of the book it is your job to look for Waldo. Waldo is a man dressed like a candy cane and it can be so hard to find him. In the same way Waldo appears on each page of those books, Jesus appears on each page of Scripture because the Bible in its entirety is about Him and no one else.
As we read in Genesis 3, we see the first promise of Jesus found in scripture.
In the beginning of Scripture we have these two people named Adam and Eve and they sinned against God and their sin has propelled all of humanity towards a life full of sin and complete separation between us and God.
The worst part about all of this is that no matter what you and I do to try and mend or fix our relationship with God, it will never work. Imagine sin being like a spaghetti sauce inside some Tupperware.
No matter how hard you try and scrub and scrub that piece of Tupperware, you can’t get all of that sauce stain off. We all know that satin isn’t going anywhere. Sometimes we try to scrub sin off of us and we throw ourselves into life’s dishwasher over and over and the stain won’t go away and inevitable, the spaghetti sauce of sin will spill itself on our life again why? because we are drawn to sin.
But God has put together a plan that can take that stain away and provide us the opportunity to be in a right relationship with Him once again.
The plan is laid out in Genesis 3: 15
15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”
The hard part about our sin is that it will lead us to a place that separates us from God for all eternity. God does not want that for me, for you or for anyone else on earth. So God looks at satan and at sin and says:
I know that the consequence of sin is that the people I have created will die but I don’t want that. Instead, one day I will send someone to take their place. I will send someone to earth and This person will take all of humanities place. This Person will take sin and death on all by Himself.
God promised Adam and Eve that one day, God would send someone that would crush sins’ head and that would put us in a place that will allow you and me to have a right relationship with God.
I am so happy to share with all of you here today that God has fulfilled that promise a little over 2000 years ago through the person in Jesus. where do we find that promise being fulfilled?
6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born,
7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.
8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.
9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.
10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.
11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.
12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
An angel arrived and shared this wonderful news. The promise God made in the book of Genesis was being fulfilled that day in the town of Bethlehem. He said in verse 11: “Today in the town of David a Savior has been to you...” Praise God that the ability to have a right relationship with Him was presented to us in the form of a baby!
Unfortunately, we have to read in Genesis that someone still has to pay the price for sin.
15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”
Jesus would crush the head of sin, but sin would strike His heel.
The hard part about all of this is that Jesus had to take on the death and while Jesus ultimately wins, He had to take on my consequence of sin. Not just mine, but all of humanities.
Jesus, being God, lays down His own life so that you and I may live. But because He is God, He comes back to life to prove to us that He is God and that He can beat death. Friends and family, today I want to share with all of you, if there is a God out there that I want on my side, It is the God of the Bible because He is the only one who can take on sin and death and come out on top. He is the only one who can take the wrath of hell away from me and put it on His Son I can be in heaven one day.
Friends, if there is a God you need on your side, it’s the one who can beat sin and He has the receipt to prove it. I encourage you today, as you seek out to remember Jesus as a baby this Christmas time, remember the sacrifice He took on, on your behalf so that you and I can be in right relationship with Him.
