You Shall Name Him Jesus
You Shall Name Him Jesus
The angel is very specific about his message to Mary. He tells her to name her child Jesus. This is Yeshua in Hebrew. The name Yeshua means “the Lord is our Salvation.” This is true. Jesus is the Lord and is Savior! John 1:29
The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
Jesus would be born of a virgin, live a perfect life without sin, offer himself as a sacrifice for our sin, be resurrected on the third day, and will return to earth to establish his Kingdom for one thousand years. After the thousand years the end will come and we will live with God forever. 1 Cor. 15:25-28
1 Corinthians 15:25–28 (NASB95)
For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet. The last enemy that will be abolished is death. For He has put all things in subjection under His feet. But when He says, “All things are put in subjection,” it is evident that He is excepted who put all things in subjection to Him. When all things are subjected to Him, then the Son Himself also will be subjected to the One who subjected all things to Him, so that God may be all in all.
Jesus is the Savior that can save you and give you this everlasting life with God. Jesus is the Savior!
Something else interesting about the name of of God’s Son is that the Old Testament prophet Isaiah said that the Messiah would be born of a virgin and be named Emmanuel. Is. 7:14
“Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.
So we must ask ourselves the question, “Why did Gabriel tell Mary to name the Child Yeshua when the Isaiah the prophet said his name would be Emmanuel?” The answer is that Yeshua describes what He will be, Emmanuel describes who He is. You see the name Emmanuel means “God with us.” Yeshua is God in the flesh. Jesus is fully God. John 1:14
And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
So as we look at the name of the Messiah we can conclude that He is our Savior and our God!
So why are these two names important? First, let’s look at Yeshua. This means that the Lord is our Savior. Humanity needs a Savior! Every person is guilty of sin and cannot make recompense for their sin. All are separated from God because of their sin. This means you cannot have a relationship with God. Rom. 8:7-8
Romans 8:7–8 (NASB95)
because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
Jesus is the the only One who can make recompense for our sin. He is our propitiation. 1 John 2:1-2
1 John 2:1–2 (NASB95)
My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.
This means Jesus has satisfied God’s wrath towards us and our sin. We can now have relationship and fellowship with the Father. This will lead to everlasting life. Rom. 8:10-11
Romans 8:10–11 (NASB95)
If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
Jesus is our Savior. Though salvation is available it is not automatic. In order to receive salvation you must repent of your sin and put your faith in the atoning sacrifice of Jesus.
Secondly, Emmanuel, which means God with us, lets us know that Jesus is with us wherever we are. Matt. 28:20
teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
This means that we are indwelt by the Spirit of Christ and carry Him wherever we go. We can always lean into him through thee vehicle of prayer and faith.
The Greatness of Jesus
The Greatness of Jesus
Gabriel tells Mary that Luke 1:32-33
Luke 1:32–33 (NASB95)
“He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.”
The first thing is that Jesus will be called the Son of the Most High God. This indicates that Jesus will not have a biological father but be virgin born through the conception of the power of God. God confirms this twice by proclaiming Jesus to be His Son. The first time is when he entered public ministry by way of baptism. Matt. 3:17
and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.”
The other time was on the mount of transfiguration. Matt. 17:5
While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold, a voice out of the cloud said, “This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased; listen to Him!”
Jesus was God’s only begotten Son. John 3:16
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
Jesus greatness comes from being the Son of God. I love what the writer of Hebrew says in Heb. 1:5
Hebrews 1:5 (NASB95)
For to which of the angels did He ever say, “You are My Son, Today I have begotten You”? And again, “I will be a Father to Him And He shall be a Son to Me”?
The second greatness of Jesus is that Jesus is King. Jesus is the fulfillment of the promise He made to King David. 2 Sam. 7:12-16
“When your days are complete and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom.
“He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
“I will be a father to him and he will be a son to Me; when he commits iniquity, I will correct him with the rod of men and the strokes of the sons of men,
but My lovingkindness shall not depart from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you.
“Your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be established forever.” ’ ”
Jesus is King. No matter who thinks they have ultimate authority on earth, Jesus is King! Rev. 17:14
“These will wage war against the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, because He is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those who are with Him are the called and chosen and faithful.”
Is Jesus your king? Do you submit to His authority as a priority over anyone else. Are you loyal to Him above anyone else?
The last thing that Gabriel mentions about Jesus Greatness is that His kingdom will never end! Dan. 7:14
Daniel 7:14 (NASB95)
“And to Him was given dominion, Glory and a kingdom, That all the peoples, nations and men of every language Might serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion Which will not pass away; And His kingdom is one Which will not be destroyed.
So we can conclude that Jesus is Savior and Lord. He is our King who is established forever. We have an opportunity to be a part of this eternal kingdom when we make Jesus our savor, Lord, and King!
