Opening grounding - Caged Bird by Maya Angelou

A free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wing
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.
But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.
The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.
The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.
But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.
The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

1st round of Check-in

How are you and how did you experience the curriculum this week?

Curriculum Questions

Before diving into the question it might be helpful to re-read this statement from Layla Saad about this week: “This week of the work was heavy. Ugly. You have probably had multiple thoughts of running away and forgetting you had ever heard of me or this work. But you are here anyway, because you are starting to understand what the real work is. And once you begin to see it, you cannot unsee it.” (Pg. 121)
What have you begun to see that you cannot unsee? (pg. 123)
What have you begun to unearth about yourself when it comes to white supremacy? (pg. 123)
If you came to this book thinking you were “one of the good white people” or an ally to BIPOC, how do you feel about that now? (pg. 123)
From the chapter about cultural appropriation please react to and discuss this quote: “What white supremacy once denied to and vilified in entire races of people it has discriminated against, it now appropriates and commodifies. This is racism, and it must be wrestled with.”(pg. 119)
“What are some of the national racial stereotypes in your country—spoken and unspoken, historic and modern—associated with Indigenous people and non-Black POC?” (pg. 112)
“Malcolm X famously called Black women the most disrespected, unprotected, and neglected people in America.” (Pg. 87) what are the ways that this statement might be lived out in our culture?

Logistics announcements

Two things to begin to think about:
Do you want to continue gathering together in some capacity in the new year?
If our church led another Me and White Supremacy Group would you be interested in leading/co-leading/participating in it?
