Take a Walk in Jesus' Shoes
Notes
Transcript
Over the last weeks we have walked in the shoes of Mary and Joseph and discussed what it must have been like for them, the difficulty they faced, the rumors, the accusations. But have you ever thought, “What was it like for Jesus”? Go to John’s gospel, chapter 1…John 1:44-46
44 Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.
45 Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.
46 And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.
Nathanael must have been actively looking for the Messiah, why else would Philip seek him out to tell him they had found the Messiah? When he heard the news from Philip that they had found the One of Whom the prophets spoke, his heart must have skipped a beat, but when he heard Who Philip identified as “Jesus of NAZARETH”, his heart must have sunk. There are two possible interpretations for his response, “Can there any goo thing come out of Nazareth?” One possibility is that the Messiah was promised to come out of Bethlehem, not Nazareth. In fact, there was no mention of Nazareth in relation to the Messiah at all. Another possibility is he said this because Nazareth had such a terrible reputation. Which interpretation is true? Why not both?
