Intro:

Rebellion came when sin entered the world (Gen2);
Rebellions consequences: Sin separates man from God (Isa59:2)
The principle of Rebellion is being in opposition to God (Rom1:20-21; 2The2:4)
The Act of rebellion: Violate God’s law (1Jn3:4)
Sin is missing the mark
Sins effect: It deceives (Heb3:13), it hardens (Eph4:17-19), it kills (Rom6:23)
And we closed with it defies, it dares, it despises, it diverts, it shackles, it soils, it scars and it separates
Wait, there was one more thing, there is a solution to the sin problem, Sin’s power is broken by Christ and Him crucified (1Cor15:1-4; 2Cor5:14-17)

What man needs is righteousness

Man having rebelled, having sinned, stands in need of righteousness
Not self imposed righteousness (Mt5:20)
Matthew 5:20 NASB95
20 “For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.
Not self imposed (Rom10:1-4) which lacks the power of God.
Romans 10:1–4 NASB95
1 Brethren, my heart’s desire and my prayer to God for them is for their salvation. 2 For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not in accordance with knowledge. 3 For not knowing about God’s righteousness and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
Man needs the righteousness of God (Rom1:16-17)
Romans 1:16–17 NASB95
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “But the righteous man shall live by faith.”

Aim for tonight:

Look at the biblical doctrine of the righteousness of God
To show man’s immediate need for Jesus Christ and his Righteousness (1Cor1:30-31; 2Pt1:1)

Outline:

Meaning, definition of Righteousness
Greek word root is “dike” and it means righteousness and is linked with the justification, or to justify.
The character or quality of being right or just.
It is the declaring by God of one to be righteous comes by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ is the standard of righteousness (Ref only: 1Pt1:16) - this shows God’s moral perfection (holiness).
God’s righteousness is man’s greatest gift to fill man’s greatest need (1Cor1:30-31, again)
1 Corinthians 1:30–31 NASB95
30 But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, 31 so that, just as it is written, “Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord.”
Deason says: “Justifying is God’s act of pronouncing or declaring one to be righteous. Justification is the result of that act (Rom3:21-4:25)

The Righteousness of God

The righteousness of God is revealed righteousness (Rom1:17)
Revealed through the gospel (Rom1:16; 1Cor15:1-4; 2The2:14)
1 Corinthians 15:1–4 NASB95
1 Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
and then
2 Thessalonians 2:14 NASB95
14 It was for this He called you through our gospel, that you may gain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
It was witnessed by the Law and the prophets (Rom3:21)
Romans 3:21 NASB95
21 But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets,
It was demonstrated on the cross (Rom3:22-26)
Romans 3:22–26 NASB95
22 even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction; 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; 25 whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed; 26 for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
The righteousness of God is apart from the Law (ref only: Rom3:21, 9:32-32, 10:1-6)
The righteousness of God is the gift of righteousness (Rom5:15-17)
Romans 5:15–17 NASB95
15 But the free gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many. 16 The gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned; for on the one hand the judgment arose from one transgression resulting in condemnation, but on the other hand the free gift arose from many transgressions resulting in justification. 17 For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.
Credited/reckoned righteous (Rom4:3-4) -to place on one’s account or to credit to (to Abraham he was reckoned unto righteousness)
It is grace given, undeserved (Rom11:6; Eph2:1-10)
Romans 11:6 NASB95
6 But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works, otherwise grace is no longer grace.
As demonstrated in Jesus sacrifice that gave us the righteousness of God through Jesus (ref: Gal2:20-21)
The righteousness of God is received through faith in Jesus Christ. (ref: Rom3:21-26, use this one 4:24-25; ref: Rom10:1-4, 10-16)
Romans 4:24–25 NASB95
24 but for our sake also, to whom it will be credited, as those who believe in Him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, 25 He who was delivered over because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification.
The righteousness of God is unto eternal life (use Rom5:21, ref: Rom6:23, use Rom8:1-2)
Romans 5:21 NASB95
21 so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
and then
Romans 8:1–2 NASB95
1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.
The righteousness of God is to be lived out in the Christian life
For we died (ref: Rom6:1-14)
We obeyed (ref: Rom6:16-19)
We attain Christ ( use: Rom8:1-5)
Romans 8:1–5 NASB95
1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. 3 For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5 For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.
We maintain (ref: Rom8:6-11)
The righteousness of God is the basis of judgment on the the disobedient and unrighteous (use: Rom1:18, ref: Rom2:5-16)
Romans 1:18 NASB95
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,

Conclusion:

The righteousness of God is needed by man; But man cannot get it on his own; He must receive it by grace through faith. The righteousness of God is unto eternal life in and through Christ Jesus.
Justice demands that the unrighteous must pay a holy Law’s demand (death; eternal separation). And we know there is none righteous; righteousness is needed by all and is available to all by grace through faith. Because Jesus went to the cross publically (ref: Rom3:25-26
