God reminds Jacob of his vow he made when he dreamed of the ladder to heaven Gen 28:20-22 Jacobs in the midst of his coming and goings he forgot to perform the vow in which he made to God. But God did not forget His part.

God called Jacob and all that was with him i.e wives, children and servents to put away the strange gods that they carried with them. Here we would assume that the terephims that Rachel stole Gen 31:19 was still within her care. God said i want them all gone. Jacob buried the idols and the earrings which wouldve been a amulet or charm for them.

After the burial there was a purification that takes place. This would happen as they washed their bodies and changed their clothes. This is a sign of the purifying of the heart from the defilement of idols. The changing of clothes was a sign of sanctification and the change of heart from idols unto the one true living God Joshua 24:23
