Introduction:
Key Verse: Luke 2:11 (NASB1995)
"For today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord."
Point 1: Jesus is the true reason for celebrating Christmas.
- His birth marks God's fulfillment of prophecy (Isaiah 7:14)
- He is Immanuel, God with us (Matthew 1:23)
a) We must keep our focus on Jesus amidst distractions
- Commercialism and materialism can divert our attention from Him
- Remembering His birth keeps us grounded in faith and worship
b) Celebrating Jesus brings joy and meaning to our lives
- He is the source of eternal hope and salvation (John 3:16)
- Our celebrations become an opportunity to honor Him
Illustration/Application Idea:
Imagine attending a grand birthday party where everyone gathers around singing "Happy Birthday" but forgets who they are celebrating. In a similar way, it's crucial that we don't lose sight of why we celebrate Christmas – it's all about honoring and remembering Jesus.
Point 2: Reflecting on His Humility
a) The incarnation reveals God's humility through Jesus' birth
- The King of Kings was born in humble circumstances (Luke 2:7)
- He willingly left His heavenly glory to dwell among us (Philippians 2:6-8)
b) Jesus' birth teaches us the value of humility
- We are called to imitate His humility in our lives (Colossians 3:12)
- Humility opens our hearts to receive God's grace (James 4:6)
c) Remembering Jesus' humble birth transforms our perspective
- It reminds us of the sacrificial love He demonstrated on the cross (Philippians 2:5)
- Our celebrations become an opportunity to cultivate a humble heart
Illustration/Application Idea:
Consider a majestic king who chooses to be born in a stable instead of a palace. This act of humility demonstrates that true greatness is not found in external grandeur but in selfless love. Let us remember and reflect on Jesus' humble birth as we celebrate Christmas.
Point 3: Responding with Worship and Gratitude
a) The shepherds responded with worship and proclamation
- They glorified and praised God for what they had seen (Luke 2:20)
- Their encounter with Jesus moved them to share the good news
b) We are called to respond with worship and gratitude as well
- Offering our heartfelt praise for God's indescribable gift (2 Corinthians 9:15)
- Sharing the message of salvation through Christ's birth
c) Remembering Jesus as the newborn King transforms our lives
- It deepens our relationship with Him, leading to transformation (Romans 12:1-2)
- Our celebrations become opportunities for evangelism and discipleship
Illustration/Application Idea:
Imagine receiving an extraordinary gift that brings immense joy. Your natural response would be overwhelming gratitude, which compels you to share your excitement with others. In this same way, let us respond with worship and gratitude for the incredible gift of Jesus.
Conclusion:
As we gather during this Christmas season, let us remember that Jesus is the true reason for our celebrations. May we recognize Him as the center of our festivities, reflect on His humility, and respond with worship and gratitude. In doing so, we honor the newborn King who came to bring hope, salvation, and transformation to our lives.
Closing Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for sending Your Son Jesus into this world as a humble baby. Help us to keep Him at the center of our Christmas celebrations and in every aspect of our lives. May we reflect on His humility and respond with heartfelt worship and gratitude. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
