Promises/Absolutes

Sermon: 18 Min
Introduction: 1.6 Min What a wonderful gift to be invited to see Jesus! Each year, we marvel at the incarnation of Christ. God made flesh, God in human form! God given by God so that sinners might be made right with Him, so that they might live. This is the wonder of Christmas. I invite those of us who have a copy of the Scripture to open to the book of John, chapter 6. We have heard the call to come, the invitation to come. Now let us look to the One who came. The One who came not to do His will but His Father’s. This Christ became man and He came to save so let us come and marvel at Christ.
In John chapter 6 we will be considering verses 35-40 and I have broken this text into four points. Our first is titled “Complete Sustainment.” The Christ offers to completely sustain those who come to Him in faith.
I. Complete Sustainment (v35) .25 Min READ SLOW Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me will never hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.
2.75 Min
The Gift of Life: In verse 35, Jesus, makes an astonishing claim… the context makes His statement, “I am the bread of life” incredible. In verse 32-33, He says He was given by His Father to give life to the world… PAUSE Don’t let the immensity of what He said pass by. When we believe in Jesus that means we trust Him, we trust Him that what He says about Himself is true. Furthermore, that isn’t simply an acknowledgment of truth, or a mental understanding of it, to trust in Jesus means that we take His words to heart. When that happens then we believe Him and it is then we receive life from the Bread of life which isn’t a short term solution like eating physical bread. PAUSE
The Assurance of Absolutes: But check this out! Don’t miss how emphatically Christ said this. He PROMISES that those who believe Him won’t ever spiritually starve, no on the contrary - it will never happen. Take it to the bank, on the Word of the Son of God to be of any benefit at all to the hearer, to take advantage of the offered gift we must believe Him. We must have confidence that He is the only means given by God by which we can live.
Paradox: Isn’t this surprising? Isn’t this strangely paradoxical - Consider what He said in comparison with what He is going to do on the cross... The Giver of life, will die, so that those who are dead might live… that is astonishing! PAUSE What a Gift given by the Father! PAUSE
Contra Example: Before we move on to our second point, I think it is timely to ask ourselves a question… If coming to Christ and believing in Him leads to life, what happens, what really happens if Christ is rejected? What must happen, to me, if I reject the Gift of God? LONG PAUSE
Transition: Verses 36-37 are our second point… I have titled it "Un/Committed.” In verses 36-37 Christ states that not everyone interacting with Him has believed.
II. Un/Committed (v36-37) .25 Min“But I said to you that you have seen Me, and yet do not believe. “All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will never cast out.
3.75 Min
Seeing Is Not Believing: John 6:36“But I said to you that you have seen Me, and yet do not believe.” Jesus says, somewhat suprisingly that, ‘seeing isn’t believing!’ Although many saw the feeding of the fives thousand earlier in the chapter, they still did not believe. That is incredible! Can we take from this that the crowds were fixated on the blessing but not the Blessor? I think we can... They desired free food and that need overshadowed any desire to truly know the Giver of that blessing. Unfortunately, it appears that these folks, are uncommitted to Christ - they don’t believe Him. But that being said, there are some, there are some that ARE committed to Him. Before we proceed though I think it needs to be clarified what I mean when I say that they are committed to Christ. When I say that they are ‘committed’ I mean that they have been given by the Father to the Son. They are divinely selected by the Father and entrusted by Him to His Son - that is what I mean when I say committed.
verse 37 says John 6:37““All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will never cast out.”
Commitment: The work of faith in the life of the Christian is so great, God removed any possibility of failure - this Work has been committed to Christ.... Christian, we have been committed to Christ! What security there is in that! What a marvel for the believer! The work of faith is a work that the Father would only entrust to His beloved Son - He committed it to the only Faithful One. What assurance! What hope the Christian has! The Christian has been committed to the One who will never lose us, He will never dispose of us, never cast us away from Him. To cast the Christian away from Himself would be unthinkable, it would be a rejection of His Father! It would be a refusal of a gift… which quite frankly is unthinkable!
Transition: You see within the Godhead all three Persons, Father, Son and Spirit work together, they are absolutely unified in God’s will. The Father sends the Son, the Son saves and the Spirit seals the Believer into Christ. Let’s continue to verse 38. Verse 38 is our third point which I have titled, “Entirely Unified”
III. Complete Unity (v38) .10 Min “For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
2.5 Min
Unified by love: The Son has come to do the will of His Father, sent by His Father, He came. He came, knowing all that would be required of Him! Knowing the humiliation of taking on human flesh He became man. All of the Godhead was unified in this, from before the beginning of time, the Godhead is unified in accomplishing the will of God. The Father sends, the Son saves, the Spirit seals and the Christian believes. Ephesians 1:13–14“In Him (CHRIST), you also, after listening to the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, unto the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory.” Not one participant in this great work comes unwillingly, but love drives every single one, ultimately all so that God may receive due honor and glory. May I add, just briefly, for your consideration another idea? This Spirit of unity present within the Godhead is also to be present within Christ’s Church. Love is to drive us, to compel us to put others ahead of ourselves, to sacrifice our comfort for others, to foster a spirit of reconciliation where sin has divided… all these things are to be done ultimately to mirror the unity, the love of God to the praise of the glory of God.
Action: Now, having understood the Christ’s commitment in doing His Father’s will it becomes apparent that we too are called to embrace and fulfill God’s will. Christ came to do His Father’s will… shouldn’t we who are in Christ do the same? LONG PAUSE. What is God’s will.... God’s will is clearly communicated in verses 39-40 for both the Son and those whom He came to save and the result is complete assurance.
Transition: The title of the fourth and final point for verses 39-40 is “Complete Assurance,” let’s read
IV. Complete Assurance (v39-40) .50 Min “Now this is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day. “For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.”
1.40 Min
God’s Will: God’s will is not a mystery, it is revealed through His word what He wills… He wills that all given to Christ will not be lost but raised to eternal life! It is God’s will that those who believe in Him will have eternal life. What a relief for those longing for assurance!
Assurance: It is the structure of verse 39 and 40 that compels belief...Do we see the repetition here of being raised? Being raised shows up in both 39 and 40… Now in Scripture, repetition provides emphasis - this promise is sure. Christ Himself will raise those who believe in Him, not to eternal destruction but to eternal life. This promise is good, it is good not just because it is repeated but because we know the character of the Promise Maker. Christ must not lose anyone, Christ must cause all given Him to be raised. Not one will be missed, none will be forgotten… All who are in Christ will be raised.
1.50 Min
Conclusion:
Summary: Salvation through Christ is the gift of God and all are invited to receive the gift of Christ. God has ensured that this gift will be received by those whom He has given to Christ. Christ must succeed, He cannot fail to do what He has been sent to accomplish. He must fulfill His promise to raise up those who believe in Him.
Conclusion: In conclusion, I ask us to consider some of the words that end this Bible found in Revelation 22:17 which says, “And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come. Let the one who wishes receive the water of life without cost.” The Spirit of Christ declares to us to come to Him. The Bride of Christ, which is the Church, declares come. Come all hearers and partake of the Giver of life in faith because as Christ says just a couple of verses later, “Yes, I am coming quickly,” So we who are in Christ say, amen, Come Lord Jesus.

Introduction: Isaiah 55:1–3““Ho! Every one who thirsts, come to the waters; And you who have no money come, buy and eat. Come, buy wine and milk Without money and without cost. “Why do you spend money for what is not bread, And your wages for what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, And delight your soul in richness. “Incline your ear and come to Me. Listen, that your soul may live; And I will cut an everlasting covenant with you, According to the faithful lovingkindnesses of David.”
Introduction:
Most Christmas messages probably don’t start the way that this one will, but please bear with me a moment… May I ask us a question, ‘Just how fearsome and terrible the God of the universe is, wrathful against our sin.” Righteous to so and yet, we come to Christmas and we see God become somehow more than man. Immanuel, God with us to share in our pitiful state, to come to remove our death sentence. Somehow God came to save us from Himself to save us for Himself by Himself. God the Father sent His Son, so horrific our assault upon His holiness was, our need was so great that it could only be addressed by the death of God’s own Son… what have we done? What have we done to earn His favor? Our sin cost God Himself. Did the Son know the cost when He came… Yes! He came!! He became man and did what no other man has ever done, perfectly abide by His great and good and terrible Law.
He came because He was sent
He became a baby - the most smallest, most fragile of Image bearers
He paid our sin to unite us with Himself and be raised to eternal life
I. Complete Sustainment (v35) 35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me will never hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.
Paraphrase: Christ has just made astonishing claims… Don’t let the immensity of what He just said pass by without marveling. He has said that He gives life! Are you alive physically today? That is from Him. Are you alive spiritually today? That is from Him. He says that those that come to Him will be sustained, cared for, provided for - He does that. The Author of life does that! Now, Christ emphasized His claims by inserting the absolute terms “never” and “never.” Take it to the bank to be of any benefit at all to the hearer, to take advantage of the offered gift we must believe Him. We must believe that He is only means by which we can live, we must feed on Christ in faith. To receive the benefit we must trust that Christ is who He claims to be. Is this not ironic, is this not paradoxical when weighed against Christ’s cross work? The Giver of life will die so that those who are dead might live? Astonishing! PAUSE What a Gift given by the Father
The Bread of life must be internalized so that we might live. Don’t let the marvel of Christ be missed, His claims are fantastic and they force a decision… To receive Complete Sustainment we must believe that He is who He says He is.
What’s the takeaway? Come to Christ for lifeChrist claims to be the gift of His Father, the Giver of every good and perfect gift. Those that come to Christ are completely provided for, completely sustained. He has just stated that He is the bread of God that gives life to the world (v32-33).
Absolute Promise to those who come/believe - never will your soul hunger or thirst, on the contrary from your innermost being will spring living water John 4:14 “but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never thirst—ever; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.””
Assertion: He sustains, He satisfies, He slakes the thirst of the sinful soul
Invitation: To receive we must become His follower and believe in Him
Fact: Christ sustains and satisfies - to be sustained and satisfied we must come and believe
Action: Come to Christ, Believe in Christ
Benefit: Never hunger, Never thirst
Absolute(s): Never/never”
Paradox: For humanity to receive life, it’s Savior must die , we must take Him into ourselves
Faith: It is required that we feed on Christ in faith
Recognize: we don’t come to Christ to bend Him to our expectations but to accept who He claims to be - that is faith
He has said that He, the Author of life, actually gives life (John 1.4, John 10.18)! Are you alive physically today (Cl 1.16)? That is through Christ. Are you alive spiritually today? That is from Him. He says that those that come to Him will be sustained, cared for, provided for - He does that. The Author of life does that!
II. Un/Committed (v36-37) .25 Min“But I said to you that you have seen Me, and yet do not believe. “All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will never cast out.
3.85 Min In verse 36 Christ takes the crowds to task. The reality is that the crowds have come to Christ because they are hungry, physically, - not because they believe He can provide them spiritual life. Earlier in the chapter, He had fed thousands of people with only a couple of fish and some loaves of bread. Now, these crowds have come to Him again for food. They have not come to Him because they believe the truth He is teaching! What an indictment, to reject the Bread of Life for the sake of food! What a charge levied against them... So let us be different and take this truth into our hearts… For the unbeliever, the blessing is far more attractive than the Blessor is. While for the believer, the Blessor is entirely sufficient and blessings are never their chief joy.
Have we ever heard these words, “seeing is believing.” If I could just see Jesus then I would believe! If I could see one of these miracles then I would know for sure, well apparently, “seeing isn’t believing.” These folks saw and they didn’t believe. Seeing is not believing and I know that because Jesus told His disciples so in John 20.29. This blessing applies to all who are in Christ now. He said in John 20:29 after He was raised from the dead,“...Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are those who did not see, and yet believed.” Oh, Friend, taking Christ at face value comes with a special blessing and that blessing is enjoyed by those who have been given to Christ by God. Let’s focus now on verse 37.
Verse 37 tells us that the work of faith in the life of the Christian is so great, so important, so critical, He removed any chance it could fail - this Work has been committed to Christ. Verse 37 tells us that, “All that the Father gave to Christ would come.” What security is there in that? What a marvel for the believer! The work of faith is a work that the Father would only entrust to His beloved Son - He committed it to the only Faithful One. What assurance! What hope the Christian has! The Author of Life has been entrusted with our eternal soul and He can never lose us, He will never dispose of us, never cast us away from Him. Would this not be a rejection of His Father to do so! It would be a refusal of a gift…
And yet there is a tension here… a tension which is good to recognize. Our responsibility is not removed to respond to Christ - He tells us to come and believe but that will never happen unless God makes sure that it happens. Unless God does a work in the human heart we are utterly unwilling to come to Him, even if we see Him physically, even if we enjoy His blessings and because of that unwillingness we are under the penalty of death - we find ourselves equally rejecting Christ unless God changes our hearts. Those who believe have been entrusted to Christ by the Father. All who are given to Christ will come to Him and He will in no way cast them out. He says in Matthew 11:28““Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.”
Although the crowds had seen Christ and thousands had eaten the food that He had provided the reality is that they were continuing to follow Him because they wanted a free meal - they didn’t believe.
v36 Accusation of Unbelief - to believe is to put one’s faith/hope/trust/confidence
Fact: Seeing is not believing - Some saw Christ, some even walked with Him (ie Judas) and did not believe - develop rejection before prime exhortation prior to the conclusion
Action: Hear Him, Believe!
Accusation: You who have seen are unbelievers so seeing is not the most critical component - belief is John 20:29“Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are those who did not see, and yet believed.””
v37 Assurance of Efficacy/Absolute Effectiveness for All who come - DEVELOP - God takes the initiative in providing persons for His Son, v37 to “never cast out” is to “never throw out” or Jesus will not refuse to accept anyone who comes to him
Fact: The Father gives those who will come to Christ, Christ never rejects who/what His Father gave Him
Action: come to Christ, come you have been given by the Father to Christ. All are being called but some will respond. John 6:44““No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day.” Tension between human and Sovereign action
Promise: Those who come to Christ will never be thrown away - assuming cast out is to cast into outer darkness.
Efficacy: All that the Father gives Me will come to Me - The Father is the One who gives/Draws 6.44. 1 Corinthians 3:7“So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but God who causes the growth.”
Privileges: The Church enjoys the fact that none are excluded that will come to Christ
Inference: The Father cares so much about our salvation that He has committed it to the only trustworthy One - we who are the called and chosen and elect who have heard the voice of the Good Shepherd are now free from anxiety
Absolutes: All that the Father gives…” “I will never cast out”
Clarification: Coming to Christ is exercising faith
Spirit Work: The Spirit applies the redemption purchased by Christ by working faith in us and uniting us with Christ Ephesians 1:13–14“In Him, you also, after listening to the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, unto the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory.”
II. Un/Committed (v36-37) .25 Min“But I said to you that you have seen Me, and yet do not believe. “All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will never cast out.
3.75 Min
Seeing Is Not Believing: John 6:36“But I said to you that you have seen Me, and yet do not believe.” Whoa, apparently, seeing isn’t believing! Although many saw the feeding of the fives thousand earlier in the chapter, they still did not believe. When I say that they are ‘committed’ I mean that they have been given by the Father to the Son.
verse 37 says John 6:37““All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will never cast out.”
Commitment: The work of faith in the life of the Christian is so great, so important, so critical, that God removed any chance it could fail - this Work has been committed to Christ, Christian, we have been committed to Christ!
The Father sends the Son, the Son saves and the Spirit regenerates. We are going to see that in verse 38. Verse 38 is our third point which I have titled, “Complete unity”
Blessing vs Blessor In verse 36 Christ takes the crowds to task. The reality is that the crowds have come to Christ because they are hungry - physically. Earlier in the chapter, He had fed thousands of people with only a couple of fish and some loaves of bread. Now, these crowds have come to Him again for food not truth... They are not coming because they believe He can provide them spiritual life. Verse 36 is a stunning indictment, to reject the Bread of Life for the sake of food! May I ask, do you know Jesus, do You know
May I suggest the following truth, For the unbeliever, the blessing is far more attractive than the Blessor is. While for the believer, the Blessor is entirely sufficient and blessings are never their chief joy. Blessings are the ultimate goal for some, while others seek out the Blessor
Tension: And yet there is a tension here… a tension which is good to recognize.
III. Complete Unity (v38) .10 Min “For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
XXX words
Unified by love: The Son has come to do the will of His Father, sent by His Father, He came. Knowing all that would be required of Him He came! Knowing the humiliation of taking on human flesh He became man. All of the Godhead was unified in this, from before the beginning of time, unified in accomplishing the will of God.
Action: Now, having understood the Christ’s commitment in doing His Father’s will it becomes apparent that we too are called to embrace and fulfill God’s will. Christ came to do His Father’s will… shouldn’t we do the same? God’s will is that the believer puts their faith in Christ alone. He ensures that it happens because of Christ.
After believing
Inference: for Christ followers we are to do the same - doing the will of our Father - this is Christ’s full joy
Fact: Christ is from God the Father from heaven, He comes to do the will of God - The Godhead is thus unified in will, specialized in participation/action
Description: Christ subordinated His will to the Father
Inference: We as children of God ought also to do His will as we too have been sent
XXX words
God’s will is not a mystery, it is revealed through His word what He wills… He will that all given to Christ will not be lost but raised to eternal life. It is God’s will that those who believe in Him will have eternal life. Now, I will draw our attention to the structure of verse 39 and 40...Do we see the repetition here of being raised? In Scripture, repetition provides emphasis - this promise is sure. Christ Himself will raise those who believe in Him, not to eternal destruction but to eternal life. This promise is good because we know the character of the Promise Maker. Christ must not lose anyone, Christ must cause all given Him to be raised. Not one will be missed, none will be forgotten… All who are in Christ will be raised.
In our first point I began to highlight the absolutes present in the text and for the sake of continuity I will do it again. All in verse 39, Everyone in verse 40,
v39 The Father has obligated the Son to complete this work, should not lose/should raise them - He “must” not lose anyone whom has been given and He must cause them all to come back to life
Fact: It is God’s will that He send His Son, that Christ not miss any one person who has believed from God and has come to Christ. All will be raised from the dead on the last day. Even more so all are under His dominion and this will include those whom rejected Him. Philippians 2:10“so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth,”
Description: God’s will is described - not a mystery, “that all given to Christ will not be lost but raised”
Christ: Dominance, complete control a gift given by the Father
Inference: Lost is eternally lost, given over to destruction. Being raised is avoiding being lost John 5:25““Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.” John 5:28–29““Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.”
Absolute(s): all that He has given”
v40 amplifies what is in verse 39 regarding His will v40 links back to v35 with the seeing/coming/believing meaning understanding/submitting/trusting in v40 Eternal life is therefore possessed now, not later
Fact: God has promised that those who see and believe in Christ will have eternal life and will be raised to life on the last day
Description: God’s will for humanity described again, “see the Son and believe.” God’s will for Christ described, Chris is to raise up believers on the last day. How to be ‘not lost’ see the Son and believe in Him with exception made for John 20:29“Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are those who did not see, and yet believed.””
Promise: Faith is a gift given from God to ensure that they be raised
Inference: Eternal life involves being raised on the last day Daniel 12:2““And many of those who sleep in the dust of the ground will awake, these to everlasting life, but the others to reproach and everlasting contempt.”
This gift is good, it sustains, it nourishes. Far better than any physical blessing
Warning: Some saw the miracles, some were fed from Christ’s hands. Some heard the teaching but only those who were given by the Father were saved. Only those who came to Christ and put all their hope in Him were saved. What an incredible tragedy that we have the same problem.
Some have been fed physically and been provided spiritual truth but will never come to Christ, will never believe in Him. Some have taken upon themselves the mantle of Christian but never held dear the promise of eternal life now because they believe in their own strength they can confront Almighty God with their own morality. Come to God the Father through Jesus His Son and in the power of His Holy Spirit.
In conclusion,
Revelation 22:17“And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come. Let the one who wishes receive the water of life without cost.”
Isaiah 59:16“And He saw that there was no man, And was astonished that there was no one to intercede; Then His own arm brought salvation to Him, And His righteousness upheld Him.”
Isaiah 63:5““I looked, and there was no one to help, And I was astonished, and there was no one to uphold; So My own arm brought salvation to Me, And My wrath upheld Me.”
John 6:35–40 “Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes (ἐρχόμενος - present/participle/middle or passive) to Me will never hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst. “But I said to you that you have seen Me, and yet do not believe. “All that the Father gives Me will come (ἥξει - future, active, indicative) to Me, and the one who comes (ἐρχόμενον - present/participle/middle passive IS THIS DESCRIBING A WAY OF APPROACHING OR IS IT GENERIC) to Me I will never cast out. “For I have come (καταβέβηκα - perfect, active, indicative) down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. “Now this is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day. “For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who sees (IS THIS WHAT IT MEANS ‘TO COME TO THE SON,’ WE MUST SEE THE SON AND BELIEVE [John 20:29 “Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are those who did not see, and yet believed.””] IT DOESNT APPEAR TO BE SO BECAUSE THE LITERAL TRANSLATION OF ‘SEE’ IS θεωρῶν OR ‘TO BEHOLD OR SEE WITH ATTENTION’) the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him (IT IS APPOINTED FOR ALL MEN TO DIE - PHYSICAL DEATH IS WHAT WE ARE RAISED UP FROM Hebrews 9:27“And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment,” up on the last day.””
INTRODUCTION: He has come to do the will of His Father, what is the will of His Father to raise those whom He has given to Christ on the last day.
