26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!”
29 But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was. 30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus.
32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. 33 And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly.
20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”
Christmas Sermon Series: Beyond Christmas: Prophecy, Promise and Purpose.
Beyond the story of Christmas, God continues to fulfill prophecies in keeping His promises to accomplish His purpose.
An article written by a director of the California Department of Mental Hygiene warns: “The Christmas season is marked by greater emotional stress and more acts of violence than any other time of the year.”
The Announcements of Jesus’ birth - first to Mary, then to Joseph.
Last time, we studied prophecies of the birth of Jesus, today we see that before its fulfillment, angelic beings appeared to give a Reassurance.
The angel came and gave:
A Reassurance of God’s Hand
A Reassurance of God’s Sovereignty
A Reassurance of God’s Faithfulness
Note: For all the of the Lord yet unfulfilled in your lives (ask), we do not need an angelic visitation anymore, we are so privileged to have the Bible the Word of God in our hands. It gives us the reassurance over and over again, that Jesus will remain victorious and that He is coming again for us.
The angel came and gave:
A Reassurance of God’s Hand.
Background story on Angelic Appearance to Joseph and Mary (talk).
30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.
20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
To Joseph and Mary - Things may seem strange, but I am involved in all this.
What did the Angel say to both Joseph and Mary?
“Do not be afraid”
How about you? Are things……
deaths this week……
The Angel came and gave:
2. A Reassurance of God’s Sovereignty.
His sovereign will will be done.
He may have allowed some things to happen.
He is in control. But there needs to be a cooperation on our part to the will of God.
There is an instruction given to both Joseph and Mary:
“And you shall call His Name Jesus” - the long promised and awaited Messiah is finally here.
Yeshua - God is Salvation
This is in accordance to God’s perfect will..
3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior,
4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
What is men to be saved from?
The angel said to Joseph:
“…and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”… (Matthew 1:21b)
The Gospel in a nutshell - John 3:16 - this simple truth is not preached anymore —-
Yeshua Jesus came to save the world from:
A. The Condemnation of Sin
B. The Control of Sin
C. The Consequence of Sin
A. The condemnation of sin
He will save “His People” from their sins - is salvation only for the Jews? But John 3:16……
But Sin is universal
17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
But Sin is universal
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
There are sins that are stereotyped. But all have sinned… anyone can have pride, bitterness, anger, jealousy — sin is universal —
Assigning some sinful behaviors by gender.

All have sinned but, after this verse…
24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
Jesus delivered us from the condemnation of sin
This is why we need a Savior
The Angel came and gave:
3. A Reassurance of God’s Faithfulness.
Simply, He keeps His promises.
One more thing the angel told Joseph was that:
“for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 1:20c)
Jesus had no human Father — not tainted by the sin of humanity — God orchestrated
The Lord Jesus is eternal, He existed in eternity,, unlike us He was uncreated
In God’s own way, those who put their trust in Jesus are also born by the Holy Spirit
29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.
How are we born? We are born again, we have been born into the family of God.
12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:
13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
We are still being saved from…
B. The control of sin
The Holy Spirit leads us to repentance.
C. The consequence of sin
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Since God is faithful, and will keep a promise to be fulfilled in the future:
The angel said to Mary:
32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. 33 And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”
This is our blessed hope.
But this is not an optional hope. Jesus is our hope for our very survival, not just among our many sources of hope.
Story of the frustrating Christmas gift. Such is the predicament of man without God. He is never able to put his life together. A life without Christ is a life of futility, nothingness, emptiness
14 in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.
Forgiveness is not automatic.. neither is being born again..acknowledge your need
Salvation like a Christmas gift, has to be received, and opened and meant to be enjoyed
We do not need an angelic visitation to know this..
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.
