acknowledging the unique stage of life. Start by recognizing that being a teenager isn't easy. It's a time filled with changes, challenges, and big expectations — from family, friends, school, and even themselves.
Relating to Their World: Talk about the pressures to fit in, to succeed academically, socially, and perhaps athletically. Acknowledge the constant comparisons amplified by social media, where everyone's life seems perfect, increasing the feeling of falling short.
Link to Faith: Bring in the aspect of faith. Discuss how, in the midst of trying to navigate these pressures, they might also grapple with their faith. There might be moments when they feel like Jesus doesn’t quite understand their struggles or that their prayers are going unanswered.Let's talk about faith in your world. It's like you're on this wild journey, juggling school, friends, and everything else. Sometimes, it feels like Jesus is off in the distance, maybe not getting what you're going through. You pray, but it seems like there's no answer. Here's the thing: Jesus gets it, more than we realize. He lived a life full of challenges too. Remember, not getting what we want right away doesn't mean Jesus isn't listening. It's more like He's working on a bigger, better plan we can't see yet. So, when you feel like He's not there, trust me, He's closer than you think, working things out in ways we might only understand later
Setting the Tone: Assure them that it's normal to feel this way and that today's message is about finding comfort and trust in Jesus, even when things don’t go as expected.
Part 1: Understanding Disappointment
- **Scripture Reference**: John the Baptist in Matthew 11:2-6. Discuss how John, while in prison, had doubts about Jesus and sent his disciples to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”
- **Application**: Emphasize that it’s normal to have expectations and to sometimes feel disappointed, even in our faith. Like John, we might have questions or doubts, especially when things don’t go as we expect.
Part 2: Jesus’ Response to Our Disappointments
- **Scripture Reference**: Jesus’ response in Matthew 11:4-5, where He cites His works as evidence of His mission.
- **Application**: Highlight that Jesus doesn’t rebuke John for his doubts. Instead, He points to the evidence of His works and teachings. Explain how Jesus meets us in our doubts and guides us towards understanding.
Part 3: The Promise of Faithfulness
- **Scripture Reference**: Hebrews 13:5, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
- **Key Message**: Stress that while Jesus might not always meet our expectations (how we think things should happen), He is always faithful to His promises. Our understanding of success or fulfillment might differ from God’s plan.
Part 4: Trusting in Jesus’ Plan
- **Scripture Reference**: Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
- **Application**: Encourage the youth to trust in Jesus, even when things don’t make sense or when they feel disappointed. God’s plan is greater than what we can see or understand.
Conclusion: Embracing Faith Over Understanding
- **Final Encouragement**: Remind them that faith isn’t about having all the answers or never facing disappointment. It’s about trusting that Jesus, who has never failed us, will continue to be faithful, even in our confusion or disillusionment.
- **Prayer**: End with a prayer, asking for strength to trust in Jesus’ unfailing nature, especially in moments of doubt or disappointment.
