Intro:
Getting gifts = awesome
Ask: What is your favorite gift that you have ever received? (give time for them to answer to the people sitting around them
My answer: my first guitar
What makes a gift good?
Right place, right time
Impact
Thoughtful/shows love
The best gift: Salvation
Given by Jesus (Christmas reminds us of this)
What Christmas is all about
We are going to talk about it
The Big Idea: Jesus gives us the best gift ever: salvation.
The Question: What makes salvation the best gift ever?
It is a needed gift
21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
Saved from sins
Who needs to be saved from their sins?
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Sin = missing the mark (archery term)
The mark: God’s righteousness (perfection)
The problem is universal
And it has a consequence
Romans 6:23a (ESV)
23 For the wages of sin is death
Wage = price of the problem
Death = eternal separation from God
That’s what everyone deserves
This is where the Christmas story comes in
God sent Jesus
Born of a virgin
Fully God, fully man
To save us
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Best news ever!
The Question: What makes salvation the best gift ever?
It is a needed gift
It is a planned gift
22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:
23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall call his name Immanuel”
(which means, God with us).
The best gifts are planned out
Thought goes into them
Ex. Samie buying me an electric toothbrush
Jesus: Planned in eternity past
Quote: Isaiah 7:14.
Written over seven hundred years before Jesus’ birth
Adam and Eve > Jesus
God carrying out His plan in the Bible
Immanuel: “God With Us”
The presence of the gift giver
The Question: What makes the gift that Jesus gives the best one ever?
It is a needed gift
It is a planned gift
It is an openable gift
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
How weird would it be if someone gave you a gift but you never open it?
Pretty strange
Yet, some of us have never opened the gift of salvation
How do we do it?
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
A response of the heart
Handing Jesus the keys to your life
Application:
Have you opened the gift?
