Midweek 12.13.23
Midweek 12.13.23
I’m in the Christmas spirit as you can tell:
Preparing for this message I was a little down
I want to preach something that had a Christmas theme
Instead we’re talking about delivering such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh that his spirit may be saved
As you read on he talks about more stuff we shouldn’t do
But if you bear with me, you’re going to watch a Christmas miracle as I segue from 1 Corinthians 5 into the birth of Jesus
Recap:
6 Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? 7 Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.
Jewish tradition of passover
15th day of Nisan
14th to completely sweep the house of leaven which continues for 7 days
Spring cleaning
Paul is showing us a correlation of passover to salvation
And the house in passover represents our body and the the church body of christ
Jesus is our passover lamb that the judgment of God might pass over us
The judgment that we deserved was carried out on Jesus for all mankind
Paul says that just as the Jews were concerned to remove all leaven from their midst
so the church should have a concern to remove such notorious, unrepentant sinners from their midst.
Christian Lives/Passover:
Our Christian lives should be characterized by the same things as passover
Salvation
10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Liberation
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
Where the spirit of the Lord is there is liberty
Joy:
24 Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.
Full of Joy
Plenty
26 You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied,
And praise the name of the Lord your God,
Who has dealt wondrously with you;
And My people shall never be put to shame.
Purity from leaven or sin
7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.
His blood
8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
Live and unleavened life cause that’s what he made you
“Salvation in sin is not possible, it must always be salvation from sin.” (Spurgeon, Charles)
Sincerity and Truth
Now that we have salvation through Jesus
Sincerity and Truth is now our guardrails that keep us directional
17 For we are not, as so many, peddling the word of God; but as of sincerity, but as from God, we speak in the sight of God in Christ.
peddlers, someone who trades in the word of God for gain
to corrupt or adulterate
Be sincere
How to make the right decisions:
Pray
Frame the problem or question
Accept what God is telling you
Obtain council
Lean on faith
Act on it
Even in doing all that before you make a decision, you’re still going to have mistakes
BUT how you can know when you’re ready to make a decision
Sincerity- Can you truly say that you’re trying to please God with your decision?
Truth:
The word of God is the only truth out there
Something might be factual, but facts are subject to change
God cannot change and he cannot lie
So the word is truth
Truth and sincerity is our guardrails in all of this - NOT PERFECTION
9 I wrote to you in my epistle not to keep company with sexually immoral people. 10 Yet I certainly did not mean with the sexually immoral people of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world.
Don’t keep company with or Mix it up with these people:
a man who prostitutes his body to another's lust for hire
a male prostitute
Fornicators
10 Yet I certainly did not mean with the sexually immoral people of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. 11 But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner—not even to eat with such a person.
12 For what have I to do with judging those also who are outside? Do you not judge those who are inside? 13 But those who are outside God judges. Therefore “put away from yourselves the evil person.”
But he clarifies: but I did not mean don’t be around the people of this world!
He was talking about what was taking place inside the church
Male prostitution, covetous, idolators etc.
Paul did not want the Corinthian Christians to expect godly behavior from ungodly people.
To disassociate from sinners in a sinful world would mean we would need to go out of the world
Surprisingly, this is exactly the approach many people take to holiness and Christian living – to get as far away from the world as possible.
How can we win the world to Jesus if we:
a. Act just like the World
b. That we remove ourselves from being around the sinner
He’s saying don’t withdrawal completely:
There was a monastic movement in the early 3rd and 4th century church
A movement based on the Christian ideal of perfection
In order to become perfect they removed themselves completely from society
Christian monks
Asceticism- to exercise,” or “to train”), the practice of the denial of physical or psychological desires in order to attain a spiritual ideal or goal.
Most religions had some form of this
In a means to basically earn salvation or separate themselves from everyone else
St. Anthony, the founder of Christian monasticism, they appeared as solitary figures who, out of a desire for further and more advanced isolation, established themselves in tombs, in abandoned or half-deteriorated human settlements, in caves, and, finally, in the wilderness of the desert to do battle against the desires of the flesh and the wiles of the devil.
I understand denying your flesh and not wanting to be caught up in the world system of doing things
But: we’re called to make disciples not run away from them
Here’s the segue:
19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
Origen wrote in 248 AD about the birth of Jesus, “The people who sat in darkness (the Gentiles) saw a great light.”
The creator of the universe the Word of God became flesh and dwelt among us
While people are trying to avoid a lost and dying World
The almighty God, The miracle of Incarnation,
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
This foundational Christian doctrine holds that divine nature of the Son of God
Perfectly united with human nature in one person
Jesus fully God, fully human
The Birth of Jesus (THE STABLE)
A cave
Animals breath and body heat keeping Jesus warm
The next time we feel like we are uncomfortable around the world
The world should make us uncomfortable
Maybe when want to avoid the mess of people in their sin
Maybe we should remember that the one who as

made the world humbled himself and was dying to Just to be with US
