1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
We are about to see the first documented temptation in the Bible. We do not know exactly how long after Adam and Eve were created that this took place but since they were commanded to be fruitful and multiply and that had not happened yet, its safe to assume this was only days or weeks after creation.
The serpent in Gen is not identified specifically as satan but in Passages such as Ezekiel 28:13 and Rev 12:9 the serpent is identified as Satan. Satans focus is to deceive, to lie and trick people to follow him instead of God. He starts his conversation off with questioning the very word of God. Satan uses that same trick today, Satan desires for us to question God’s word, God has written his story down for us and satan would like nothing more than for us to question it and deny its truth! We ALL FALL FOR THESE LIES! at some point every one of us has heard an untruth and believed it over God. We must allow the truth of Gods word to correct these untrue thoughts.
2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
Quickly lets notice that Eve didn’t just tell the serpent what God’s command was, she added to it. God never said do not touch it, he said don’t eat it. Maybe fear made her add a protective layer onto the command, i’m not sure why she added this part but either way satan jumps right in to deny the very word of God, calling Him a liar. making it look like God is trying to keep something good from Adam and eve. Satan instantly paints God in a wrong light and attacking the very character of God.
5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
Notice this, satan tells a half truth. Reality was twisted to make the terrible truth sound good. The truth was, eating this fruit would allow them to know good and evil! what satan was twisting was how terrible this added knowledge would be. before the first sin, mankind only knew good, they had no idea what evil was! and instantly after sin entered so did shame and regret.
6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
Notice, Adam and Eve were together in the garden. Eve did not have to go looking for Adam. The Bible tells us that eve was deceived but Adam chose to eat, without being deceived. He was not tricked and he willingly sinned against God. I can’t pretend to know what was going on in his head but the bible tells us He was not. We could break this verse down into the three main sins, selfishness, lust and pride but thats not the main point I want to look at today.
14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and transgressed.
7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
The first thing they notice when they are aware of evil, is nakedness. I find this interesting, they immediately find a way to sew some fig leaves together to make some crude coverings. They are trying to cover themselves up and hid the bareness that they are all of a sudden aware of. We can easily connect this to the coverings that God makes for Adam and Eve later on (we will study that in a couple weeks).
See Adam and eve are worried about covering their mortal bodies, but God sees the sin that caused this and now God must act to cover the sin, in a way that only God can. Adam and Eve do not have the power to undo what they just did! its like pandoras box was just opened and nothing can put the world back to the way it was!
22 According to the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
Sin brought death and forgiveness is not possible without the shedding of blood!
Back to what we saw with the Serpent calling into question God’s motives. He said God is keeping something good from you, the truth was God was trying to protect you from certain death and destruction.
8 And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden. 9 And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? 10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
Adam was afraid of God because the evil that he had never known has now taken root in his heart! Adam was instantly filled with shame, and the guilt of sin was placed on his head! Adam had already made cloths with figs, he was not physically naked anymore, but he was spiritually naked and full of sin with a wicked heart. That same wicked heart has passed from Adam to every living person that has ever lived. every one of us is born with the weight of guilt placed on our heads. We are born with the curse of sin and stamped with the same death penalty on our heads. There is no person, worse or better than another, we are all the same, sinners heading towards eternal punishment in hell!
11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? 12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. 13 And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. 14 And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
Obviously God did not ask because He didn’t know. This was God pointing out the sin and giving man the opportunity to confess and seek forgiveness. Instead we see a series of blame shifting. Adam blames Eve, Eve blames the serpent, the serpent was like, Well i’m caught, nobody for me to pass the blame too.
God then rolls out some punishments that will take place even before death ultimately takes them. in a couple weeks we will dive into all these curses but I want us to take the rest of this time to look at a great promise that God makes in the middle of handing out judgement.
15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
God brings the promise of a massive conflict that will arise between the seed of this serpent and the seed of this woman. Note both the seed of the serpent and the seed of the woman are in a singular form. This is the first prophecy of a coming savior, God says the seed of the serpent or the antichrist will bruise the seed of the woman, later defined as the Christ or the Messiah. The Christ will endure pain and be bruised but the Christ will strike the head, delivering the fatal blow!
This is the first of at least 48 prophesies that Jesus fulfilled just with his birth, not including the other prophesies He fulfilled in his life, death and resurrection.
The Bible is full of Messianic prophecies. Mathematician Peter Stoner counted the probability of one person fulfilling even a small number of them. And he concluded, the chance of a single man fulfilling “just” 48 of the prophecies found in the Tanakh (Old Testament) would be one in (10 followed by 157 zeros)! https://firmisrael.org/learn/how-many-prophecies-did-jesus-fulfill/
As we prepare for Christmas and focus on the birth of Christ, a truly remarkable event that displays the magnificent grace of our great God! We must not forget the purpose! Jesus Christ came for one reason, to shed His blood to bring salvation to those who would believe in Him! We often think to a beautiful baby, and a quaint little manger scene, but lets remember the purpose, His purpose was to come, suffer, bleed and die so you would not have to! He came to buy your salvation with His blood!
