Authority of Christ’s Teaching
Authority of Christ’s Teaching
Scripture Reading:
They went into Capernaum; and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and began to teach.
They were amazed at His teaching; for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
Just then there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit; and he cried out,
saying, “What business do we have with each other, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”
And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!”
Throwing him into convulsions, the unclean spirit cried out with a loud voice and came out of him.
They were all amazed, so that they debated among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.”
Immediately the news about Him spread everywhere into all the surrounding district of Galilee.
I. Introduction
a. Last week we discussed how that Jesus baptism, was fulfilling and showing the gospel. We saw how when Christ being baptized, going under the water signifying His death and burial, His coming up out of the water, His resurrection and then the Holy Spirit descending upon Him, signifying His ascension to heaven and Him sending the Holy Spirit as promised.
b. We also saw that when came out of the wilderness that He commissioned Simon (Peter), Andrew, James and John to follow Him and He would make them fishers of men.
c. This is significant as this really plays into today’s teaching of sharing the gospel with others. From here on out in Mark, Jesus shows us first He is the Christ and proves it. He showed us how to share the gospel.
d. When Jesus came out of the wilderness it clearly states in Mark 1:15 “and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
II. Preaching
a. Story of cancer and what really matters.
b. Matthew 6:19-21 ““Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. “But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
b. What is the treasure Jesus talking about? Souls
c. So part of the gospel commission is that we go out and we become fishers of men as Christ stated to the disciples.
d. In Romans 10 it tells someone how to receive Jesus Christ and be saved. One is saved by faith in Christ Jesus and how do we have faith in Christ? Romans 10:17 “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.”
e. but there is a lot more stated in the scriptures proceeding that verse:
for “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher?
How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news of good things!”
However, they did not all heed the good news; for Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our report?”
f. We that are saved have a definite calling our lives and that we are to share the gospel with the people in our lives. We are not talking about standing up here at a pulpit and preaching, but in our every day lives live and share the gospel of Jesus Christ. What we need to learn from the Gospel of Mark is what is the gospel and over the course of hte next several months to learn how to take that and share with others.
III. Scribe’s Authority
a. Mark 1:22 “They were amazed at His teaching; for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.”
b. Mark 1:27 “They were all amazed, so that they debated among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.”
c. Scribes when they would teach, would read exactly what was in the scriptures, then they would try to teach what it meant. However, they would indicate by whose authority they are quoting on the interpretation. For example, “Rabbi so and so states such and such”.
d. Just like others state that, “Dr so and so said this” or “Professor so and so said that”, which in turns gives some credence to what you are saying.
IV. Christ’s Authority
a. However, when Christ taught He did no such thing, but stated it like this, “I say to you”, or “Verily, verily I say to you”. When Jesus spoke He spoke say I am telling you, not using any body else as the reference or authority of what He is telling you.
b. In John chapter 10 if you remember Jesus was sparring with Pharisees about having witnesses to who He was and one of those witnesses was the works He preformed.
c. John 10:24-25 “The Jews then gathered around Him, and were saying to Him, “How long will You keep us in suspense? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.” Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe; the works that I do in My Father’s name, these testify of Me.”
d. You see in Mark 1:21-22 “They went into Capernaum; and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and began to teach. They were amazed at His teaching; for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.”
e. He entered the synagogue and started teaching, then what happened? a man in the synagogue had an unclean spirit and started talking to Him:
f. Mark 1:23-26 “Just then there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, saying, “What business do we have with each other, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!” And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” Throwing him into convulsions, the unclean spirit cried out with a loud voice and came out of him.”
g. Jesus casts out a demon, therefore the works He preformed was a witness to what He was teaching. God did the same thing with the Apostles when Jesus ascended to heaven, God showed by signs and miracles to testify that the gospel that they were teaching was in fact true and from God.
h. Acts 3:33 “And with great power the apostles were giving testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and abundant grace was upon them all.”
V. Summary
a. what is one of the greatest miracles that show power of the gospel? A person saved and transformed. Listen we don’t need to fluff the gospel of Jesus Christ, we just need to live and share it.
b. Because the gospel has God’s power behind it: Romans 1:16 “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.”
c. So as we take this journey through the Gospel of Mark let us become like the disciples and become fishers of men.
