A Handbook on Paul’s Letter to the Colossians 3. The Person and Work of Christ (1:15–20)

There is much discussion about whether this “hymn” about the person and work of Christ (verses 15–20) is Paul’s own creation or whether it existed independently and was used, or adapted, by Paul in this letter. Whatever the conclusion reached on this question, its practical implication for the translator is slight, since he is bound to try to express the meaning in terms and fashion consistent with its setting in Colossians. The practical matter of whether or not to use a poetic form and structure will depend on the effect of such a form on the readers. Some modern translations, such as GeCL TOB JB, do so. First the Son’s nature and existence (verse 15) are described, followed by his role in Creation, and his continuing relation to the universe (verses 16–17. Then his relation to the Church is stated (verse 18a), followed by another statement of his supremacy, by virtue of his resurrection (verse 18b, c). The final statement has to do with the reconciliation of all creation through him, effected by God through Christ’s sacrificial death on the cross (verses 19–20).
