“Myrrh: Lamb of God”

welcome
recap last week
wisemen = more then 3,
Jesus was not a baby but rather closer to 2
talk on Judging people for their 2 year olds…yup thats right, I was that guy…until Nash came…
Jesus recieved three “unusual” gifts
Matthew 2:10–11 ESV
When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.
Gold = kingship
Frankincense = High Priest
Myrrh……what is Myrrh?
Myrrh is this gum like substance that is mentioned 17x in the bible
Occasionally, myrrh would have been used as an antiseptic. For example, if you know the story on Jesus on the cross, they offered Him wine mixed with myrrh to dull the pain
but Jesus rejected that because he wanted to bear the full force and weight of our sins.
More commonly though, myrrh was known as an ingredient used to embalm the dead. In other words, myrrh would have been used when Jesus gave His life, to help prepare His body for burial
So biblical scholars say, and I wholeheartedly agree, Myrrh represents Jesus as the Suffering Servant or the Lamb of God who was born to die for OUR sins…
I want us to spend the remainder of our time together here going through an OT passage or rather an OT prophecy or prophetic passage found in Isaiah 53 so we can see what was said about how Myrrh represents Jesus as the suffering servant who was sent and born to suffer in our place for the forgivness of our sins…
Talk about sports and predicting the two teams this years SB = what if i told you that 700 years from now I could predict the two teams that will play in the SB and not just that but the exact score = a prophet like no other…
well as amazing as that would be, Isaiah essentially did just that as he detailed in Isaiah 53 the suffering that our Lord, the suffering servant, would endure on our behalf
and we are going to get into that but first lets talk about a real problem here…our real problem, yours and mine, our problem that we have and thats SIN…
I'm gonna show you the price that Jesus paid for our sinful problem, so we could be forgiven and experience eternal life
lets go to Isaiah 53.6
Isaiah 53:6 ESV
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Talk about how this is not a compliment
Not a lion, not a eagle, I would be so happy if he said we are like turkeys but nope he said we like sheep…
in other words he is saying that we are not the brightest crayons in the box…
talk about animals that can be trained, dogs, lions, tigers, monkeys, and fine ill give it to you maybe even cats…
circus = no one to see sheep
Sheep essentially are three things = Weak, witless, and wayward…
weak = they cant defend themselves…
talk on defending against animals…
they are witless = They cant think for themselves, they follow the crowed…if they see one sheep doing dumb sheep stuff they all do dumb sheep stuff…Tik Tok anyone??
talk on the “tragedy” in 2005 in Turkey, 1500 sheep ran off a cliff when they saw one do it…only 400 died, the other 1100 had a cushion on the bottom = joke on this…
sheep are wayward, they wander…
hey where are you going little sheep, “ahh just over here, you know looking for happiness…oh maybe if i buy these shoes ill be happy, nope just got me into debt, oh wait that looks fun i want to experience that…ouch nope that just ended up hurting…
everyone else is doing that im going to try…
when the prophet Isaiah said we are all like sheep he is not saying “wow yall are amazing”
no he is saying yall need a lot of help because you tend to leave Gods path for your life and follow your own…and yet we have the audacity to blame God for our life being the way it is…
preach it
we are like sheep, we wander and we chase after approval of man, we chase the status quo, we chase clout or likes on SM…
700 years before Jesus arrived Isaiah prophesied about the coming savior our suffering servant who would take the weight of our sin on his back, he would take the rejection and punishment on himself, our punishment we would take upon himself…
Isaiah 53:6–7 ESV
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.
have you Ever been Hurt—Betrayed—Left out—Misunderstood, rejected? Jesus Understands where your at…
Isaiah 53:3–5 ESV
He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.
Well the Christmas scene is beautiful and all but that was a “holy event” that happened a long time ago, how does it apply to me, what do I need to take from it…
look when we understand the magnitude of christs suffering and his sacrifice that he took for you and for me…emphasis this…we no longer simply say yeah sure im a Christian or look at it casually
Yeah i go to church, I sit in the seats, I pray from time to time, at least over my food…
no when you understand the suffering Christ the suffering servant the lamb of God took on his shoulders for you and for me the only reasonable response is to wholly, completely follow him to give your full life to him…
ill try to describe it for you, but i wont do it justice to the magnitude of what actually happened…
lets start in the Garden of Gethsemane = this was the place jesus wrestled with his heavenly father…he knew the suffering he was to endure and he cried out to God…
told disciples to pray but they fell asleep, and all alone he falls down in sorrow, his spirit troubled, and blood dripping from his brow
medical term Hemosiderosis
happens when enduring extreme shock or trauma its when your capillaries burst and blood is mingled with your sweat, and drips out…
again falling to the ground, alone cries out to God "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow "to the point of death."
That's how bad it was. God, can we do this another way?
And then he declares faithfully, "Yet Father, not my will, but your will be done."
talk on this trouble, this anxiety…
now describe the process
Arrested—Falsely accused—Unfairly tried—Sentenced death crucifixion.
once in captivity he was stripped naked to be shamed
a crown of thorns put on his head 1-2in thick
he was spit on and with a signet ring beaten
with clubs he was beaten in his head driving those 1-2 in thorns deeper
and then beaten some more
Isaiah describes that they pulled out his beard and he was beaten so badly that he was unrecognizable
then he had to carry a 100 pound cross 650 yards down the path known as “the way of suffering” and crucified on golgotha
then 7in nails were driven into his wrists and feet and he was left there naked, in the heat of the day, beaten and fighting for every breath…
you see it wouldn't take long for his shoulders to dislocate causing suffocation…causing more pain
you see but the most painful part is when the innocent one, the one without blame, suddenly had all the sins and weight of the world became everything vile, and filthy, and unholy, and demonic,
he became that, and God, in his righteousness and holiness who could not look upon sin, pulls away, and intimate fellowship Jesus had always known with his Father is broken,
and its at this agonizing moment he cries out to his father, “my God my God why have you forsaken me”…
they offered him the wine mixed with Myrrh, yet he said no, I will bear the full weight, I will finish what my father sent me to do…and he declares in in faith and at that moment declared it finished and commited his life into Gods hands
you see Isaiah, 700 years before this ever took place, he prophetically declared what this child, innocent one, born of a virgin, never sinned, would endure on behalf of our sinfulness.
Isaiah 53:8–9 ESV
By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people? And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth.
Isaiah 53:11 ESV
Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities.
What sets Christianity apart from other religions? Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, New Age? Bloody death of a helpless innocent victim!
What separates Christianity from all other world religions is that God would become flesh and he would be pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins, beaten so we could be made whole, and by the stripes he bore upon his back, we would be healed.
talk about wisemen bringing Jesus Myrrh foreshadowing what was to come Jesus the suffering servant the lamb of God would come to suffer on our behalf to take the sins of the world…
Jesus Foreshadowed this in Luke 9.22-23
Luke 9:22–23 ESV
saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.” And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
talk on this…its not a live my best life now, its not i say a prayer and im good, its not jesus is my homeboy i dont have to do anything…No die to self, pick up your cross daily, and whole heatedly follow Him…
why should we follow jesus,
because he died for you and for me he was crushed for our sins, for our lustfulness for our hypocrisy, for our greed, for our hatred, so we can have eternal life with him
when you understand the magnitude and the price he paid, you should have no other response but to completely live for him
preach it
HOLY SPIRIT TAKE OVER……
