The Joy of Christmas
Luke 2:10
Introduction: When you consider the meaning of the Christmas season, one outstanding feature is the joy Christmas brings. There are many joys that surround this time of year. The time you are able to spend with family. The time to slow down and reflect about life’s meaning and purpose. The time to consider the needs of others and the time to attend church with God’s people to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas.
Each of these bring joy to our lives. In this first Christmas, there is a joy but not just joy alone, but great joy. The idea of great means that which is large and extra fulfilling. God is showing us here Jesus brings great joy to our lives.
The reason so many don’t have joy is because they are looking for joy in the wrong places. A pill or a bottle will not bring joy. A party or a thing will not bring joy. They bring a short bit of happiness but joy comes from Jesus Christ.
I. The source of joy
A. Relationship with Christ
1. The tidings speak of the good news that the Messiah has come.
2. He provides a relationship with Him.
B. Regular walk with Christ
1. Walking with Him daily means we have a daily time with Him.
2. Prayer and Bible reading is not just something that I do once a week on Sundays but have a daily time with Him.
3. Let me encourage you to start your year right with Him.
II. The satisfaction of joy
A. Jesus brings contentment
“But godliness with contentment is great gain.” (1 Timothy 6:6)
B. Jesus brings rest
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” (Matthew 11:28–29)
