In the Beginning

The opening words of scripture are “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God hovered over the waters. Then God said....
God through his words would speak all of creation into existence. He would make humanity in his image, and breath in his nostrils the breath of life.
Today is Christmas eve, this is the night that we wait with eager aniticipation the WORD made flesh. We remember that God entered into the brokeness of the very world he created.
In the beginning was the word, the word was with God and the word was God. And the word became flesh and made his home among us. Jesus Christ, Emmanuel, a little child in a manger is God with us. On this night the creator of all things, who through his word gave life to everything that exists, entered into a dark and broken world.
As we remember the word made flesh, lets not forget that God enters the brokenness of our lives and makes himself at home. May we be as full of unfailing love and faithfulness as he was and still is this Christmas.

The Word Made Flesh

This morning lets wrestle with the word becoming flesh and making himself at home. Our words are part of us. They begin as a breath from deep within us that we form into what we want to say. Our words can encourage or speak life into some one or they can do the opposite. Others even expect our lives to live up to what we say. Often times our words fail us and others, God’s word never fails us or others.
Psalm 33:6 NRSV
6 By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and all their host by the breath of his mouth.
Isaiah 40:8 NRSV
8 The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand forever.
Isaiah 55:10–11 NRSV
10 For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return there until they have watered the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, 11 so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it.
John opens his gospel with the first words of all of scripture. In the beginning. This would have resonated deeply with the early readers. God’s intent for his good creation was never the mess of the Roman occupation they endured, or the darkness of our news headlines today. In the beginning God saw that his creation was very good. God has a plan to redeem that goodness . The words in the beginning caused early readers, and us today, to remember how things were at creation when God through his word said “Let there be light!”
John, not done with his play on words, continues “In the beginning was the Word, the word was with God and the word was God. The repetition of the word would have brought back memories of Psalm 33:6, Isaiah 40:8, and Isaiah 55:10-11.
Brothers and sisters this is why we are here today. This is why houses are adorned with Christmas lights. This is the reason we gather and celebrate with family and friends. We remember the greatest Christmas gift ever given, God, the word made flesh entering into the brokenness and darkness of his good creation.
John 1:14 NRSV
14 And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.
John for Everyone, Part 1: Chapters 1–10 The Word Made Flesh (John 1:1–18)

Jesus comes to God’s people, and God’s people do what the rest of the world do: they prefer darkness to light. That is why fresh grace is needed, on top of the grace already given (verse 16): the law, given by Moses, points in the right direction, but, like Moses himself, it doesn’t take us to the promised land. For that, you need the grace and truth that come through Jesus the Messiah, the son of God.

God has had a plan from the beginning to redeem the goodness of his creation.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be world with out end. Amen, Amen.
