Once again it is Christmas time… I go into stores, and sometimes I find myself surprised by the carols I hear played. Then at the same time, I am thankful that the world hears the Biblical truths they teach. Then, I am reminded that we live in a world that rejects Christ, but accepts Him as baby Jesus… As a result of all of this over the last few weeks, I found myself, giving much consideration to the Scriptures taught through the carols we sing...
Colossians 3:16–17 KJV 1900
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
I praise God that the carols we sing, teach and admonish. They are also a praise, rejoicing and should bring adoration for our Saviour! It is easy to sing songs without thought. It is easy to walk around a sing Christmas carols without giving any thought to their meaning… Let’s be intentional this season, let’s sing with purpose, let’s sing, and allow these songs to bring Joy because of the hope that we have through Christ!
Some 700 years prior to the birth of Christ, the Lord prophesied His coming through Isaiah...
Isaiah 7:14 KJV 1900
Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, And shall call his name Immanuel.
Think of the faithful Israelites that were just waiting for this prophecy to be fulfilled! Like Simeon and Anna who were waiting for the Messiah, and then rejoiced when He arrived!
O Come, O Come, Emmanuel
Read Luke 2:25-38
Come thou Long Expected Jesus
Where did He come? To the little town called Bethlehem, which was the city of David!
O Little Town of Bethlehem
Read: Micah 5:2
That little town of Bethlehem brings so much concerning Christ to mind. I can’t help but think of Ruth and Boaz… About Jesse, and Samuel coming to anoint David king. About the light that would come to a world of darkness and about the bread of life that would arrive through Bethlehem. (House of bread)
It came upon a Midnight Clear
Read: Luke 2:8-14, 1:79
Maybe your thinking, what does that have to do with the midnight clear? What kind of night does one sleep out in an open field to watch over the sheep? (vs. 14 compared to 1:79) It is still the message of peace!
Silent Night
My favorite verse (3) With the dawn of redeeming grace!
Read: Luke 1:68, 2:11
Angels we have heard on High That term Gloria in “exceisis Deo” is Latin meaning Glory to God in the Highest!
Read: Luke 2:13-14
O come all ye faithful
Read: Luke 2:15-20, Matthew 2:11
Just think of that wonderful joyous message, that we all get to be a part of! The shepherds heard that night and responded! Let us do the same!
What Child is this?
The carol that asks the probing question, who the “child”!!!!!! There is only one Answer! This this is Christ the King!
Read: Luke 1:31-33
Go Tell it on the Mountain
Read Luke 2:17
Hark the Herald Angels Sing
This hymn by Charles Wesley deals with more than the heralding angels but the Biblical truths surrounding the birth of Christ.

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: And the government shall be upon his shoulder: And his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, Upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, To order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice From henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.
