Luke 2:1-32
Luke 2:1-32
The last couple of weeks we read about the preparation for the coming of Jesus Christ to earth as a human, but fully God!
Now, as we read of His birth......which is not to be taken lightly.....
Because it is in the Holy Scriptures.....
Also, because the Only Begotten Son of God has come to deliver humanity from it’s sin
God has visited us!
The pronouncement of the angels ought to be a sign to us of the importance of the coming of Jesus Christ!
This child coming in the only way that could save humanity......
To pay the penalty for sin that is given by God because of His wrath toward our sin
Only a human could rightly pay for sin, rightly!
Only God could endure it and live forever!
So, Christ came in likeness of man.......God made manifest in the flesh!
His beginnings and his endings as a man was humble and lowly, but His rightful place is King of kings and Lord of lords!
Peter and a few disciples saw the transfigured Christ.......in His rightful state as God the Son at the Mt. of Transfiguration in Matthew 17..........
John saw Jesus like that in the book of Revelation.......He fell as a dead man at the sight of the Jesus Christ the Son of God!
So, the entrance onto the scene in that amongst that people, by God the Son, was powerful......not so much, the human way, but the truth in His coming!
We get lost sometime in the scenery but the power of God and His Son in the truth of life, their existence and our failure to please them......
In our failure/fall, instead of being rid of all humanity, such as in Noah’s day and some in Sodom and Gomorrah...........God sent His Son to save us!
Hebrews 2:3 “How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;”
This is the idea of what the angels were declaring.....they were sent by God to relay the message of Jesus coming to earth, but it was also a spontaneous response to the birth of our Lord, our Savior!
The shepherd reaction to the news was a response to the fulfillment of the promise of deliverance by God to the people!
They knew God the Father’s Word and His promise of the coming Deliverer/Messiah
They knew where He would be born, that He was to be born of a virgin.
Simeon’s response is very profound to me and always has been......
It was revealed to Simeon by the Holy Ghost/Spirit that he would not see death until he saw the Messiah, the Lord’s Christ/Anointed!
That was only purpose for living........expressed by his own words.....now let your servant depart in peace, because he saw the Lord’s salvation in the child of Jesus Christ!
Jesus reveals what He is and has come for in John 14:1-6.............There is only One God, The Godhead, The Trinity..........there is only one way to God the Father which is the ultimate of life.......the way is Jesus Christ......
There is only One way.....to God!.......Jesus
There is only One truth about God and about that way........Jesus
There is only One life that can be lived unto God and Jesus lived it!
Our lives seemed to get lost in society and it’s meaning of life......we get focused in our situations in life and lose the reality of the life God has made us for.......we were created for His glory and for His pleasure and by living that life out is fulfilling for us, but we have fallen from that life.....and Paul says that no one seeks after God, God’s way, God’s truth!
The truth that the only true life is unto God and Jesus has fulfilled that in His life on earth....
He is the truth and life that we should follow......that makes that path/faith the only way to God!
I do not like to here people say that this is “my truth”........because there is not other truth, Jesus lived it out for us all to see......His life, death, and resurrection cannot be manipulated into your truth....it is His, the only Way to the Father!!!
Why do we want it to be different, because our flesh is in such a state that it pulls at everything in us to take root down here and let everything be about down here!
When we do good works for other people....it is for their good, but hopefully that ultimate good is to know Jesus Christ the only Way to God the Father!
He is the only reality of life, the only way to the Father!
Revelation 5........let’s listen to the the response of those elders, the beasts, and the angels.........
The scene is Heaven........The book/scroll
Some think the scroll was the title deed to planet earth. This is an attractive idea, especially because the coming time of tribulation will end with Jesus ruling on earth. But it is hard to demonstrate this with certainty. The best connection in this idea seems to be with Jeremiah 32:6-15, which describes Jewish title deeds as sealed. But there is no doubt that the earth is the Lord’s (Psalm 24:1), though the governments of this world belong in some sense to Satan (Luke 4:5-8). If God has to get the title deed back, when did God ever “lose” the title deed to planet earth? In fact, God holds this scroll — it isn’t lost. But the scroll must be opened, it must be revealed.
A scroll written: The best solution is to see the scroll as “God’s will, his final settlement of the affairs of the universe.” (Barclay) This is based on the idea that customarily, under Roman law, wills were sealed with seven seals, each from a witness to the validity of the will.
Some even say that it is all that rolled up in a scroll as they used to in the Roman empire.
This is all about God and it is all about His purposes!
The Lion of the tribe of Judah......Genesis 49:8-12........
The Root of Jesse
These are all messianic titles that has been given of Jesus through prophecy
Hearing those titles, especially of the lion, John turns to see a Lamb, literally a little Lamb with the scars from It’s slaughter clearly visible but not dictating life.
7 horns....do not get lost in the imagery rather the meaning....
Horns mean strength, power....all-powerful is what it means being 7 is the number of completion!
7 eyes.....All knowing
Then He came and took the scroll: No created being was found worthy to take the scroll, but the Lamb can take it.
Then the song.....Here, the emphasis is on His work of redemption.
The song honors the price of redemption: for You were slain.T
he song honors the worker of redemption: have redeemed us.T
The song honors the destination of redemption: have redeemed us to God.T
The song honors the payment of redemption: by Your blood.
The song honors the scope of redemption: every tribe and tongue and people and nation
The song honors the length of redemption: have made us kings and priests to our God
.The song honors the result of redemption: and we shall reign on the earth.
Every creature: John couldn’t be any more complete in his description. Truly, this is every creature — in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them.
Blessing and honor and glory and power be to Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb: This combined worship of the Father and the Lamb is strong testimony to the deity of Jesus. “There cannot be the slightest doubt that the Lamb is to be reckoned with God and as God.” (L. Morris)
“Depend upon it, my hearer, you never will go to heaven unless you are prepared to worship Jesus Christ as God. They are all doing it there: you will have to come to it, and if you entertain the notion that he is a mere man, or that he is anything less than God, I am afraid you will have to begin at the beginning and learn what true religion means. You have a poor foundation to rest upon. I could not trust my soul with a mere man, or believe in an atonement made by a mere man: I must see God himself putting his hand to so gigantic a work.” (Spurgeon)
Galatians 3:29 “And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.”
Romans 8:17 “And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.”
