Q18 How was original sin conveyed from our first parents to us? A18 Original sin is conveyed to us through natural conception and birth which results in sin nature (John 3:6)

Psalm 51:5“Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me.”
Job 14:4““Who can make the clean out of the unclean? No one!”
John 3:6““That which has been born of the flesh is flesh, and that which has been born of the Spirit is spirit.”
Attention grabbing introduction:
In past weeks we have been exploring sin, learning all the different ways we are impacted by sin, learning how our sin impacts others and just how sad our situation is. I think we can all agree it sin is worse than we thought it was and we really need God to fix it for us.
Tonight we are rounding out our discussion with getting an understanding of just how it is that
- not a happy topic but we are coming to the end of this particular section with just a couple more questions.
ave you ever discovered you were guilty of doing something that you had previously denied?
Did the denials actually help your situation or were you still guilty? THE RIGHT ANSWER THEY SHOULD RESPOND WITH IS THAT THEY ARE STILL GUILTY.
Turn with me to Matthew chapter 27. In chapter 27 Jesus is before Pilate the governor and the governor is trying to release Jesus because He is innocent of any sin and yet Pilate decides to crucify Him anyway because of pressure from the Jews.
Matthew 27:22–24 “Pilate said to them, “Then, what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said, “Let Him be crucified!” And he said, “Why, what evil did He do?” But they were crying out all the more, saying, “Let Him be crucified!” Now when Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but rather that a riot was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood; see to that yourselves.””
Was Pilate guilty? Of course he was! Pilate was guilty because he commanded Jesus to be executed, even though he knew Jesus was innocent.". Could Pilate remove that guilt? No, Pilate was stuck with it, forever, because he sinned. And we are the same too, everyone, no matter how they might deny it we are all guilty of sin
Question/Answer
So here is tonight’s question: Q18 How was original sin conveyed from our first parents to us? A18 Original sin is conveyed to us through natural conception and birth which results in sin nature (John 3:6 ““That which has been born of the flesh is flesh, and that which has been born of the Spirit is spirit.” )
Breakdown:
Let’s break down what this question is asking: How are we considered to be sinners? In what way are we sinners? Is it just because of sins we actually do or things we should do that we don’t? No, it is broader than that. We have multiple layers of guilt.
Our answer tells us that we are guilty four different ways.
1). We are guilty because of the sin nature inherited from Adam - Romans 5:12“Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned—”
2). We are guilty because we no longer are considered “Good.” Do we remember when God made all things good and said that they were good each day (Gen 1.31)? After Adam and Eve ate the fruit all of humanity is considered no longer good. In this we stand guilty. We now suffer the loss of original righteousness - Romans 3:10“as it is written, “THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE;”
3). We are guilty in that there is not one part of us that is not contaminated. Once we are guilty we cannot become un-guilty - this is the complete corruption which is original sin - Ephesians 2:1“And you were dead in your transgressions and sins,”
4). Lastly, we are guilty because of actual transgressions which we do - Matthew 15:19““For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual immoralities, thefts, false witness, slanders.”
Question/Answer
Here is tonight’s question: Q17 Why is humanity's condition considered sinful? A17 Our sinful condition consists of: guilt inherited from Adam, a loss of original righteousness, complete corruption which is original sin, as well as actual transgressions which come from it. (Rom. 5:19)
Personalize:
I have, you have, we have a sinful condition. We are completely sinful and we carry the guilt that comes with that.
Does that mean that we cannot do anything good? No, it just means that we are utterly incapable of fixing our own condition. It doesn’t mean that we cannot love our parents, or do nice things for people, no it just means that we are helpless to fix ourselves, we cannot remove our stain.
We are completely stained with sin, not just by our own actions but because of the actions of Adam, and the loss of our status of being “good” and because we are completely contaminated - there is no part of us that is without sin - we are guilty and stained.... so how are we ever to be reconciled to God? If those who are guilty must be punished how are we ever going to remove this sin guilt? Well, that is where Christ comes in.
Good News For Sinners:
Colossians 1:20–22 “And through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross—through Him—whether things on earth or things in heaven. And although you were formerly alienated and enemies in mind and in evil deeds, but now He reconciled you in the body of His flesh through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach—”
Positionally, the Christian, is made perfectly clean because he has been united with Christ who is perfect - although we were enemies, and apart, and guilty, Jesus reconciled us to God by dying for our sins. Those who believe are now, holy and blameless and beyond reproach.
Even though we are guilty four different ways Christ can make us clean because He is perfect and He gives His perfection to those who believe in Him.
Romans 5:18–21“So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men. For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were appointed sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be appointed righteous. Now the Law came in so that the transgression would increase, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
