The Meaning behind the Name....
The Meaning behind the Name....
I was blessed to preach from Matthew 1:23 last sunday. As I was studying and researching, I started looking at the biblical names for God and Jesus and looking at their meanings.
Some questions were put in my mind as i looked at those meanings....
1, do we truly understand the meanings behind those names
2, do we apply those meanings to our everyday life.
3, are we being good disciples and spreading those meanings....
It made me think about school....
I took all these fancy classes and they made sure we understood, and applied but I do not use some of that stuff today....TALK, PREACH....(not knocking education)....
the thing that will last for all eternity....we need to understand, we need to apply and we need to spread....
Once again the bible is here to help us....not harm but help....TALK, PREACH.....
So let’s look at and walk thru some of these biblical names and meanings....
Immanuel.....God with us
Isaiah 7:14 “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.”
Matthew 1:23 ““Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.””
What I like about this one, is that we can take it literally…and say that God is with us...
Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible (Chapter 1)
as God manifested in the flesh, and the living bond of holy and most intimate fellowship between God and men from henceforth and for ever.
God has been with man since the very beginning of time…TALK, PREACH......
interesting fact....Emmanuel is Jesus’ name descriptively, but it was never spoken to Him directly. You’ll never read in Scripture about someone saying, “Emmanuel, come over here please.” You’ll hear them say, “Jesus,” “Rabbi,” or “Master,” but never Emmanuel.
TALK, PREACH....
APPLY TO OUR LIVES TODAY.....
Next let’s look at the name Jesus......
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Two: The King’s Birth (Matthew 1–2)
The name Jesus means “Saviour”
Now i know a few guys named Jesus or Jesus....and i can tell you they can’t even save themselves.....
However, Mary and Joseph didnt come up with this name on their own...
Matthew 1:21 “And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.””
We call on His name all the time but when you are calling Jesus, you are also calling your Saviour.....TALK, PREACH....
There’s some meaning behind that name.... save me from this, save me from that, save me from myself....TALK, PREACH...
Now God himself named Jesus but for a sidenote, there is another name with similar meaning....Jesus comes from the Hebrew name, Joshua (“Jehovah is salvation
But his name was not always Joshua....Numbers 13:16 “These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun, Joshua.”
Moses changed his name and if i may briefly, some of us need to make sure we get our name changed.....SERVANT....TALK, PREACH....
Church, there’s meaning in that name, Jesus....
Next let’s look at the name Christ.....
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Two: The King’s Birth (Matthew 1–2)
Christ means “anointed
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Two: The King’s Birth (Matthew 1–2)
it is the Greek equivalent of Messiah
the anointed one or the chosen one who is sent by God to save his people and establish his kingdom
there’s meaning.....
why do you call him Christ....do you truly know that He is the anointed one....or do you say it because that’s how you were raised....
that personal relationship.....TALK, PREACH....
as individuals we need to know and understand that God is with us, that He is our Saviour and that he is anointed and sent by God to save and establish.......

One last one.....
Jeremiah 23:6 “In His days Judah will be saved, And Israel will dwell safely; Now this is His name by which He will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS”
In Hebrew, Jehovah-Tsidkenu
Jeremiah announced that this would be the name by which He will be called. He will be the way that the righteousness of Yahweh is given unto His people, so that He Himself is our righteousness.
This is a most mellifluous and sweet name of our Lord Jesus Christ, importing his Godhead,
Matthew Henry states, By making satisfaction to the justice of God for the sin of man, he has brought in an everlasting righteousness, and so made it over to us in the covenant of grace that, upon our believing consent to that covenant, it becomes ours. His being Jehovah our righteousness implies that he is so our righteousness as no creature could be. He is a sovereign, all-sufficient, eternal righteousness. All our righteousness has its being from him, and by him it subsists, and we are made the righteousness of God in him.
