Intro: The men’s group recently sung a hymn together and on the paper we had there was a discrepancy from the word of God. It seemed pretty harmless and minor but words matter! Dakota pointed out that we needed to sing the correct word! AMEN!
Rejoice in the Lord alway(s) and again I say rejoice…
Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.
For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus’ sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh.
Whenever we see something like this, we have some options...
Chalk it up as a mistake from the translators...
A printing error...
Look at the commentary...
Study the Scriptures… There is a reason both words exist!
“Always” Each and every time, event, occasion...
Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means. The Lord be with you all.
Always is used here because each and every time peace is needed, it is always there...
Pastor Brandon always preaches long… Meaning every time I preach, I preach long...
For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers;
Always indicated that each and every time that Paul prayed, he mentioned the saints at Rome...
Another word...
Some time vs. sometimes...
He appeared that way for some time… Implies his appearance was constant over a period of time.
He sometimes appeared that way… Implies his appearance changed as the occasion changed...
And thou shalt set upon the table shewbread before me alway.
Behold, I build an house to the name of the Lord my God, to dedicate it to him, and to burn before him sweet incense, and for the continual shewbread, and for the burnt offerings morning and evening, on the sabbaths, and on the new moons, and on the solemn feasts of the Lord our God. This is an ordinance for ever to Israel.
Thou therefore, and thy sons, and thy servants, shall till the land for him, and thou shalt bring in the fruits, that thy master’s son may have food to eat: but Mephibosheth thy master’s son shall eat bread alway at my table. Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.
And David said unto him, Fear not: for I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan thy father’s sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually.
Forty years long was I grieved with this generation,
And said, It is a people that do err in their heart,
And they have not known my ways:
Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways.
Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.
6 Bible examples of people that rejoiced!
God’s Goodness - Ex. 18:19
Worship - Deut. 12:12
Gifts - 1 Sam. 2:1
Praise - Ps. 33:1
Salvation - Ps. 35:9
Who He is - 1 Chron. 16:15, Psalm 40:16.
Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.
When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me. For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always.
We also find this passage in Mark 14 and John 12 and they both use “Always”
Compare with...
Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Notice in vs. 19 - Name and not name(s). Names would be correct if the Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost were three different people but they are not so name is appropriate!
Vs. 20 Alway… Matthew 26:11 Always
Is this a contradiction?
If Christ said Always in Mt. 28:20 it would have been… But words matter!
In Matthew 26 Is speaking of the occasion for His flesh is going to end.
In Matthew 28 Is speaking of His continual presents...
Christ is saying, “you will not have me always, but lo, I am with you alway!
We never see alway used with a negative… Matt. 26:11 “but me ye have not always...” Alway is never used with a negative.
Closing: We are bound by this thing called time...
Always - Linear, time, temporal, tempest, temporary, temperature
And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven, And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer:
And hence, we have the transition from always to alway...
Rejoice in the Lord alway… Meaning we can start now and we will never stop!
Always - Each and every time
Alway - For all time!
I have inclined mine heart to perform thy statutes
Alway, even unto the end.
