Thirsty
Isaiah 55:1 NKJV
1 “Ho! Everyone who thirsts, Come to the waters; And you who have no money, Come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk Without money and without price.
Isaiah 55:2 NKJV
2 Why do you spend money for what is not bread, And your wages for what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, And let your soul delight itself in abundance.
Free provision for every need .
- The First invitation, “Come to the waters”, underlines a life- threatening need and an abundant supply.
- The second invitation, come buy and eat, extended to the one who has no money, highlights inability and helplessness: on the one hand, how can one without money buy? But, on the other hand, nothing can be had without payment.
- There is someone in context that has made the payment and it’s not you! Christ has made the payment.
- The third invitation , come buy wine and milk, without money, stresses the richness of the provision: not just the water of bare necessity but the wine and milk of luxurious satisfaction.
The Intensity of Thirst
Probably no craving of the human body is more intense than thirst. When Shackleton (Irish Explorer) left twenty-one of his men under the command of Frank Wild on Elephant Island, he took five with him on the twenty-foot lifeboat James Caird. It took them sixteen days to cross the most stormy seas to reach South Georgia. After about twelve, their water supply was very low and had become salty. “Thirst took possession of us.… The wind was still strong and the heavy sea forced us to navigate carefully, but any thought of our peril from the waves was buried beneath the consciousness of our raging thirst” (pp. 175–76).
Yet they had to endure four more days before they made it to land. Then suddenly, “We heard a gurgle sound that was sweet music in our ears, and, peering around, found a stream of fresh water almost at our feet. A moment later we were down on our knees drinking the pure ice-cold water in long draughts that put new life into us. It was a splendid moment” .
We all have natural thirst like the body’s need for water, Our minds thirst for knowledge and culture, the heart for affection , fellowship , significance .
But these verses are speaking about spiritual thirst, and spiritual satisfaction.
Our souls thirst.
Psalm 42:1–2 NKJV
1 As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God. 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?
After a deer is being chased by dogs or a mountain lion , the deer is exhausted, it has a heighten sense of fear, disorder, anxiousness, confusion.
Its like the deer is looking for a place of refuge a place to recharge. A place of security . A place of refreshment.
My soul, All my nature.
When my soul thirst for God its the most intense craving after the highest good.
This is a mark of grace for one to long after God this deeply.
We don’t naturally do it, its given by God.
We don’t long for the building, or mere laws, but for God Himself!
Our souls long for communion with God.
Like a parched traveller in the wilderness, his bottle is empty the wells run dry. Its either drink or die.
This is the longing for our souls drink or die.
Being fulfilled spiritually effects every other aspect in my life.
When I’m spiritually full I realize my God will supply all my needs
Philippians 4:19 NKJV
19 And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
&
Philippians 4:13 NKJV
13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
The other thirst we have in life aren’t illegitimate. Like your need for food and water is very legit.
Some would say I have no need for money. But you do have a need for money you have kids and a wife . you need money.
I don’t need friends I have God . No you need friends because you’re weird by yourself.
Matthew 5:3–6 NKJV
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.
The only way I can be marked by proverty of spirit , vs 3
The only way I can be grieved over sin personal and social . vs 4
The only way I can approach God and man with meekness vs 5
my life must be characterized as one who hungers and thirsts after righteousness.
go back to Isaiah 55:1\
See our currency isn’t accepted by God.
Thats like trying to buy groceries at Food Lion with the rupee. ( India/ Pakastan money)
Our nature means and ways on how we engage people and life is totally different then how we engage God.
Isaiah 55:3–4 NKJV
3 Incline your ear, and come to Me. Hear, and your soul shall live; And I will make an everlasting covenant with you— The sure mercies of David. 4 Indeed I have given him as a witness to the people, A leader and commander for the people.
You hardly know on what ground the Bible is accepted as true, and hence cunning unbelievers give you a good shaking when they get ahold of you on that point. But there is one thing on which you can never be shaken: You feel the gospel must be true because it just suits the needs of your heart. If any man should say to you when you are thirsty, “Water is not good,” you would say, “Give me more of it; I have a thirst in here that makes me desire it.” By an irresistible process stronger than logic, you can prove to yourself that water is good because it quenches your thirst.
Just so with bread. When you are hungry, if you come to the table and a philosopher should say to you, “You do not understand the ground on which bread nourishes the human frame; you do not know anything about the process of digestion and the method of assimilation, and how the bones are nourished by the phosphorus, and by the lime, and by the silica contained in the flour!”
You would say, “I do not know; I do not care particularly to know. But one thing I know: I am sure bread is good to eat if I am hungry, and I will show you.” Then you seize the loaf and begin to cut and eat.
So it is with the believing heart. The heart is hungry; therefore the heart feeds on Jesus. The heart is thirsty; therefore the heart drinks the living water. And so the heart believes unto righteousness.
