In the first half of Gen 3 we saw the serpent tricked Eve into disobeying God and Adam was not tricked but willingly walked into sin. We saw God promise to send a redeemer born of a woman to crush the head of the serpent. God also gave some punishments to the serpent for deceiving the woman. Now we are going to look at the fallout that was handed to the man and woman.
16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
The first consequence to the woman is pain during child birth the second is the desire for the husband.
The Lexham Bible Dictionary (Desire)
DESIRE (tšû·qā) A strong, natural, morally neutral force that drives humans to satisfy needs of life.
Part of the curse of sin is a woman’s natural desire to seek fulfilment in her husband rather than God, where it should be. One of the biggest conflicts marriages often have are because the husband and wife look to each other to make them happy. Notice the definition is a Natural force, this means it comes Natural and its normal for all woman. Let me just say, ladies, if your wanting your husband to make you happy all the time, your going to be miserable. No Husband has the ability to make his wife happy, all the time.
With that said, we take the knowledge of this natural tendency and work at reminding yourself to seek joy from the promises of God!
The last consequence is the husband being the leader of the woman. This is not a slam on woman, this is God setting into place an order of operation for the home. This does not mean the husband has the right to dominate, be little or abuse his wife. This simply sets the husband as the natural leader, provider and protector of the home.
21 being submissive to one another in the fear of God.
Eph tells us that husbands and wives should submit to each other. The husband may have the final say but both the husband and wife should put the preferences of his/her spouse above his own.
God commands a husband to love his wife, love is an action word. this means the husbands actions should reflect love towards his wife.
17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; 18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; 19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
Adams punishment is a life of hard labour. When God created Adam he told Adam to tend the Garden. Work is not the curse, the main part of the curse was on the ground, now the work would be much harder to get the earth to produce food.
Thorns and thistles will now work against man to choke out the food, creating more work for us.
God says this painful work process will last until the day we die and return to dust.
20 And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.
Eve means life spring. She is the mother of all living people. There is a lot we could say about this but let me just quickly note that this emphasizes what we see all over the Bible, there is only one race, the human race. We are all descended from the same two people, Adam and Eve. We all have the same sin nature, there is not one person alive that is better or worse than any other! It is only by the Grace of God that any of us have salvation.
There are some wild stories some churches teach about a different woman (Lilith) that lived before Eve and some of the earth descended from her, that is completely false and against the Bible. That story was made to try to make racism ok, but it is not ok. The Bible tells us that anyone who hates his brother (mankind) does not have the love of God in him.
10 But by the grace of God I am what I am. And His grace toward me was not in vain. I labored more abundantly than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.
We need to realize that all men are in the same boat, we are all evil sinners with No good in us! God’s grace saved us and God’s grace can save every other person alive on this earth.
21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them.
So God looked at Adam and Eve and the fig leaves they used to make their cloths and saw them as not good enough. So we see the first death in the Bible as God used the skin from an animal to cover Adam and Eve. There is a lot of symbolism we could point to in this passage, like mankind can not cover itself, only God can cover us from our sin. or the fact that the Bible teaches there is no forgiveness without the shedding of blood and how God promised, one day a saviour (Jesus Christ) would come and do just that. But here is another picture I want us to look at. Two sinners that deserved death were standing in from of a Holy God. and that Holy, Perfect, Just God looked at them with Love and made them coverings that were suitable and better than what they could do. God from day one of the fall of man, has been lovingly providing for sinful mankind!
22 And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: 23 Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. 24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.
We mentioned before how Adam and Eve only knew good, they had no idea what evil was before they sinned. now their knowledge of evil has corrupted them. God, even though He loved them and showed them great kindness and love, could not allow these evil corrupt people to live forever the way they are. death must come.
27 As it is appointed for men to die once, but after this comes the judgment,
Death, does not mean the end. Death simply means separation. Because of sin, man must go through death, or the process of being separated from the sinful bodies they now possess. God could not allow, us to live forever in these sinful corrupt bodies. Death must come, and to those who have put their faith in Christ, that death brings new life. A life separated from the curse of sin forever and ever. For those who have never put their faith in Christ, after they die, they go through the second death. Rev 20:14
14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
Anyone who dies without salvation by putting their faith in Christ, will be cast into the lake of fire for all eternity, completely separated from God, this is the second death.
15 saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe the gospel.”
Repent simply means to change direction. Turn away from any other god or false belief and turn to Jesus Christ. Understand that sin is why this world is full of problems but our loving God has provided the only way for salvation, by trusting in Jesus Christ to cover your sins the same way that first animal skin covered Adam and Eve when God gave it to them. If you have never accepted this covering before, chose to do so today. do not leave today without being covered by the blood of Jesus Christ.
Adam and Eve were told death would come if they sinned against God, that sin curse has passed to every one of us. This means death or separation from this corrupted body must happen. But if we trust in Jesus Christ as savior death will be a wonderful thing, it will mean being separated from this sinful, pain filled body and joined to the creator for all eternity!
None of us are guaranteed to be alive tomorrow, believe the good news of Jesus today and start tomorrow off in a new life!
