Living by Faith
Hebrews 11:6 (KJV 1900)
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
INTRO:” Romans 1:17
For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
Faith is essential in all Christians’ lives. Why?
Romans 14:23 (KJV 1900)
And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.
I. THE SAINT OF GOD LIVES BY FAITH
A. Galatians 2:20
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
B. Habakkuk 2:4
“The just shall live by his faith”
C. Hebrews 11:6 Text
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
II. THE SAINT’s NOT ONLY LIVES BY FAITH BUT He STANDS BY FAITH
A. Roman 11:18-22
18 Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee.
19 Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in.
20 Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear:
21 For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee.
22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness
B. Hear Paul’s admonition to the Corinthian church:
2 Corinthians 1:24
24 Not for that we have dominion over your faith, but are helpers of your joy: for by faith ye stand .
C. Ephesians 6:13–18
13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
III. THE SAINT’s WALKS BY FAITH
A. Romans 4:8-13
8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.
9 Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.
10 How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.
11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:
12 And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised.
13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith
B. 2 Corinthians 5:7 “For we walk by faith, not by sight”
C. 1 John 2:6
“He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked” .
IV. WE LIVE, STAND, AND WALK BY FAITH THAT WE MAY OBTAIN A GOOD REPORT BY FAITH!
A. “For by it [faith] the elders obtained a good report” Hebrews 11:2
B. Hebrews 11:4
By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.
C. Its Our faith gives a good report to our God.
V. We OVERCOME THE WORLD BY FAITH
A. 1 John 5:4–5
4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?
B. We must have faith in God and all His promises. Our faith is overcoming power.
VI. WE RESISTS THE DEVIL BY FAITH
A. 1 Peter 5:8,9
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
B. James 4:7
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
C. 1 John 4:4
4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
D. 1 Timothy 6:12
12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.
E. We must stay sober, be vigilant, for our adversary is subtle(Sneaky) and strong. We must seek God’s help when combating him. We sould never resist without Him.
VII. WE ARE MADE TO OVERCOME BY FAITH
A. Saints live, stand, walk, obtain a good report, and resist by faith—and now we find we are made to overcome by faith.
B. Ephesians 6:16
Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
C. 1 John 2:13
I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning.
I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one.
I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father.
D. “To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life” (Revelation 2:7).
CONCLUSION:
This is Victorous living! It is living in victory! And if we continue living by faith until the end, Jesus has promised,
“Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life” (Revelation 2:10).
