Psalm 40:2-3
Introduction: facing circumstances that we cannot change can cause us to feel like we have fallen into a deep pit and that we cannot climb out. Many people feel trapped in a loveless marriage with an inattentive and uncaring spouse. Others feel trapped in an unsatisfying job that offers no room for advancement. Many young mothers feel trapped by the constant needs of their little ones. Those who suffer physically often feel trapped in painful, limited bodies. Countless multitudes are slaves to the horrible memories of their pasts. Millions of people are trapped in habitual sins and addictions that they cannot conquer. Some are trapped by depression, discouragement, and despondency. In these and other situations, we often feel that we are drowning in our troubles, gradually sinking deeper and deeper into despair.
THE FACT OF SIN—"OUT OF A HORRIBLE PIT"
David described his experience as sinking in the miry or muddy clay of a horrible pit. Failing to identify his specific circumstance, David only revealed that his life was in danger.
Whatever the circumstance, David felt that he was gradually sinking to his death.
2 THE FACT OF SALVATION—"HE BROUGHT ME UP"
He knew the power and domination of sin, but he also knew deliverance from sin is possible.
There was no freeing himself from sin. David needed outside help; so does every man.
Just in time—the Lord reached down and lifted him to safety. Even more, the Lord planted his feet on a rock—a firm and secure place.
Likewise, God the Father reached down to sinful man and met him at the point of his need. He sent His Son, Jesus Christ into this world of sin.
3 THE FACT OF SAFETY—"AND SET MY FEET UPON A ROCK"
Safety is the portion and position of God's people. They know they are His.
One can be assured that he is vitally and eternally related to Jesus Christ Every man is better saved than able to tell of salvation. How strong is the cord (a string or thin rope) that binds us to the heart of God!
4 THE FACT OF STABILITY—"AND ESTABLISHED MY GOINGS"
That means the future—in everything regarding my salvation—is settled. I do not need to worry about it Salvation has been provided, I have appropriated it, and He has guaranteed me a safe landing in glory do we ember when we used to crash every time.
"Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ" (Phil. 1:6)
When the Lord delivered David, He did more than merely change his surroundings and his circumstances. When the Lord delivered David, He also worked in David to effect certain changes. What the Lord did in David life is a picture of what He has done in your life and mine[1]
5 THE FACT OF SUSTAINING JOY—"AND HE HATH PUT A NEW SONG IN MY MOUTH, EVEN PRAISE UNTO OUR GOD"
God will inspire songs and words of praise. This almost sounds selfish or self-serving, but when we understand how well and right it is for the creature to praise the Creator, the redeemed to praise the Redeemer, the delivered to praise the Deliverer, then it makes sense. We are grateful that God gives us the ability to praise Him
