Where Are You?

After Adam and Eve are created in God’s image and in His likeness, He also gives them a choice to stay with/in Him or choose their own path by placing a tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the midst of the Garden. In the end they choose ‘self’ instead of God. Genesis 2:16-17; Genesis 3:3,6,7
Adam and Eve hide because of the “Shame” they felt, the Embarrassment of coming face to face with God, and because they knew no matter how much leaves they put on, they could not repair the damage they had just caused to their Relationship with God. (Just think of how you feel, when you have just done something wrong to your spouse or friends. You feel like disappearing and running and hiding because of Shame, Embarrassment and fear that you
just broke your marriage or friendship). Adam and Eve reacted just like how you and I react when we mess up.
God comes and calls out to Adam, “Where are You?” Genesis 3:8-11
First let us acknowledge the fact that,
‘Adam and Eve “Run away from God”
God “Comes looking for Them”
God never sits and waits for us to come to Him but instead, He is the one who ALWAYS makes the first step in coming to us so that He can fix the mess we are or have made!!! (Romans 5:8)
Now back to the question God asks them, “Where are you?”
Is this really a question about Physical location, or is it more than that?
When you read scripture we find reasons why God asks the question, “Where are you?”
Those who are in Jesus(God) have no need to feel Shame or Condemnation. Instead they know they have a Savior they can run to in order to receive forgiveness and a renewal of their minds and hearts. Romans 8:1, Psalms 51:10, Hebrews 4:15,16
When Adam and Eve sinned, they were no longer “In God”. That’s why they felt the Shame, Guilt and condemnation. The sin they had done caused a separation and they lost all hope of ever being reconnected back to God. (Isaiah 59:2)
When God is asking the question “where are you?” God is saying to them, “the shame and embarrassment you’re feeling don’t exist where I am or with those that are with me. Those who are “In Me” experiences are Peace, Joy and Love. In other words, if you’re feeling shame and embarrassment, it means you are not with me!
God is the source of life. Eternal Life is only found In God. Which means, outside of God, “THERE IS NO LIFE”. John 1:4 and Psalms 36:9, John 14:6, John 5:26. In asking the question “where are you” God is also trying to let them know that they have chosen to walk away from life and are now living in death. No matter how many leaves they put on, they can’t fix it because Life is ONLY found in God! The same is true for us also. No amount of work will ever give us Eternal life. The wages of sin is death and all of us have sinned and therefore deserve to die. (Romans 6:23; Romans 3:23)
When God tells Adam and Eve they will die the day they eat from the tree, God is not saying, “if you don’t obey me I will kill you”. Instead He is warning them that if they choose the tree, they are choosing to walk away from God; and if they walk away from God, they are walking away from Life and heading into death. Those who sin die not because God kills anyone who disobeys him, but because they are living outside of God where there is no life.
The same question is being asked to you and me today.
