Correction on KJV being translated from Latin.
The question that I want to address tonight is one that I think is important and highlights what makes us distinct as Free Will Baptists: why do we take part in the Lord’s Supper and Feet Washing together?
In order to further delve into this, I want to compare Communion and feet washing with baptism. With baptism, we remember and celebrate.
We remember Christ’s death and celebrate His resurrection
We celebrate the death of sin and resurrection to newness of life.
We consider justification and sanctification.
There is a dual nature of baptism where we both consider what was done for us as well as what is now possible!
However, with communion, for instance, we celebrate what Christ has done for us:
His death
Our death in Him
Justification
Christ’s work for us
The first greatest commandment
Unity with Christ
Whereas with the washing of the saint’s feet, we celebrate the effects of what God has done in us in Christ:
His resurrection
Our resurrection to newness of life
Sanctification
Christ’s work in us
The second great commandment
Unity with other believers
Because we pair the two, we are able to consider the effects of Christ’s death and celebrate the effects as well.
