Well we have reached a new year, 2024, and I’m looking forward to what this year brings. Obviously 2023 didn’t always go as I had hoped with many of my health issues that I hope to get managed better this year. I want to thank all those that have prayed for me and my family as we have struggled with these illnesses especially the last several months. Today, thankfully, we are going to continue where we left off last with the theme, “Impact 3:16” by looking at 2 Corinthians 3:16.
Before we get to that passage let us remember what Paul was talking about leading up to this. In verses 4-15 Paul is pointing out that the veil Moses wore over his head after God has “passed by” while he was on mount Sinai is a type to the New Law and Covenant as they anti-type.
The veil Moses wore prevented the Israelites from seeing that glory on Moses’ face from fading away.
2 Corinthians 3:7 (NKJV)
7 But if the ministry of death, written and engraved on stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of the glory of his countenance, which glory was passing away,
The Law of Moses, was never meant to be a continuous law for all time and to all people because “the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life” (2 Corinthians 3:6). The Old Law of Moses was faulty due to man’s inability to be perfect (Hebrews 8:7) because it had no way for sins to be removed (Romans 3:20). This is why Paul writes in verse 11 that this New Law “is much more glorious” (2 Corinthians 3:11).
The Israelites, as a people, had hardened their hearts to the truth that their “law” was faulty and needed to die in order to bring about a new law (Romans 7:1-3) which is why that Old Law was nailed to the cross with Jesus (Colossians 2:14). Let’s read 2 Corinthians 3:15-16.
2 Corinthians 3:15–16 NKJV
15 But even to this day, when Moses is read, a veil lies on their heart. 16 Nevertheless when one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.
This is what Paul is saying here. That if the Israelites would seek the truth i.e., God’s will (Matthew 7:21; John 17:17), and submit to it, then that veil of darkness to truth over their heart can be removed. They will see the light with eyes wide open for the first time.
It isn’t just the Jews that have hidden their hearts in darkness by covering it with a veil of their own wants and desires. Many people today, who call themselves Christians do the same thing. They ignore any aspect of God’s word that doesn’t fit their wants, desires, or narrative and claim “that’s just your interpretation.” Truth has only one interpretation so something is either true or not.
We must work very hard to keep Satan’s temptation to “believe whatever we want to believe” out of our heart and seek the truth at any cost (Luke 14:25-33).
