Jesus’ ministry expands yet more through the agency of his twelve disciples, and yet people still misunderstand him and oppose God. This passage contains three paragraphs. First, Jesus commissions the Twelve to do miracles and to preach, an extension of his own ministry (6:7–13). Second, Herod’s complete misunderstanding of Jesus is related in fascinating and unprecedented detail, allowing the reader a look at why one individual came to wrong conclusions about Jesus’ identity (6:8–29). Third, the Twelve return from their missionary journey (6:30–31).
