5 / CHECKING YOUR SPIRITUAL CONDITION
Text: “Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves” (2 Cor. 13:5).
I. Some Are Yapping
“If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man …” (James 3:2).
A. According to Webster, yapping means to “bark snappishly; to yelp. To talk noisily.”
B. In the church many complain. They criticize the pastor, people, and program. They find fault with what is done and what isn’t done.
C. A critical spirit discourages and destroys. We should seek to be helpful, not hurtful. (James 3:13).
II. Some Are Yawning
“Awake thou that steepest, and arise from the dead …” (Eph. 5:14).
A. Some go to church to sleep. They hear nothing, see nothing, feel nothing, and do nothing.
B. Many Christians are unconcerned. Their lethargy prevents them from being productive for God.
C. We must be alive unto God—revive our hope, increase our love, and work our faith (Rom. 13:11–12).
III. Some Are Yearning
“For he satisfieth the longing soul …” (Ps. 107–9).
A. Millions are yearning, seeking for something to fill their inward emptiness. Christ alone can satisfy (Rom. 5:1).
B. Many Christians are yearning for a more effective and meaningful life. The Holy Spirit can fill their need (Rom. 15:13).
C. When we repent and believe, we receive forgiveness of sins (1 John 1:7, 9). When we consecrate ourselves to God by faith, the Holy Spirit cleanses us and fills us with divine love (Rom. 5:5).
IV. Some Are Yielding
“Yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead …” (Rom. 6:13).
A. Children get into trouble when they insist on having their own way. A stubborn will limits effectiveness.
B. We must yield to God by surrendering our will to Him.
C. We must yield for God, too, bringing forth fruit (John 15:5)—working, witnessing, and winning others to Him.
