The importance of the Question
The importance of the Question
Prayer
Welcome back to the Anchor everyone! Tonight we are going to be asking the question: what is the Trinity? Why does the Church believe this? What does it matter to my life anyways?
Okay before we dive in we are going to do a little experiment - Set up dot and line puzzle
Okay so the reason we did this puzzle was to prepare your guys minds to be stretched. Are you ready to begin?
In your own words how would you guys describe the Trinity?
Have your heard of anything like this before?
We are going to be diving deeper into this, to help you guys understand where in the Bible the teaching of God as triune is found. If there is anything that doesn’t make sense feel free to ask questions along the way.
(ASK STUDENTS TO READ THE PASSAGES!)
Invite them to go on a Bible journey!
A SYSTEMATIC SEARCH!
A SYSTEMATIC SEARCH!
Could you guys help me in answering these questions by looking up verse
1. There is only one God
1. There is only one God
Deuteronomy 6:4 - The Lord is one
Isaiah 46:9 - No other like God, none like Him
God alone created the universe (Gen 1:1), is all powerful, all knowing, and all present. No one besides Him can do these things. He is greater then angels, He created them. He is greater than mankind. He is the greatest of all.
2. God is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit
2. God is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit
The Bible says that God is three distinct persons: The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Where in the Bible do we see this?
God the Father -
(OT) Deuteronomy 32:6
(NT) Ephesians 4:6
1 John 3:1
God the Son -
(OT) Isaiah 9:6
(NT) - 1 John 5:20
John 1:1
John 1:14
God the Holy Spirit -
(OT) Genesis 1:2
(NT) 2 Corinthians 3:17
Acts 5:3-4
Other passages in scripture where we see the Trinity:
Matthew 28:18-19
1 Peter 1:2
Okay so, let me try to explain it this way:
3 distinct persons
1 being
--------------
we have
1 distinct person
1 being
--------------
Any questions about this?
3. The the persons of the Trinity are distinct
3. The the persons of the Trinity are distinct
But what exactly are the difference tasks of the Trinity?
What do you guys think the role of the Father is?
The Father planned and sent Jesus
John 3:16
What do you guys think the role of the Son is?
The Son lived a perfect life and died for us
Romans 5:8
He rose again and is Lord over all, our King.
Hebrews 1:8
What do you guys think the role of the Holy Spirit is?
The Spirit is our helper
John 14:26
Okay cool, what does this mean for right now? How does this impact us?
Okay cool, what does this mean for right now? How does this impact us?
Let’s take a look at the beginning - the book of Genesis - did you guys know we actually can see the trinity in the very first chapter of the Bible?
Let’s go to Genesis 1:26-27
Would somebody be able to read this for me?
Do you guys notice what God says at the beginning of that verse?
We are made in God’s likeness - His likeness is relational!
Can someone read John 17:4-5
Jesus (God the son) was with God the Father in heaven relationally before He created the world!
He calls us to join this relationship with Him! Because of the Son’s blood we can now enter the relationship.
Do you guys know what the punishment for sin is?
It’s death. Only one who is completely perfect and deserving of life could take our place. Jesus took our place, He paid the price of death. His perfect blood was shed. Everything that He deserved goes to us now, as He took everything that we deserved.
1. The trinity is relational (John 17)
2. We are invited to have a relationship with God (1 John 1)
3. We are called to love one another as God loves Himself and us (Gen 1 and 1 John 4)
Okay, now before we break up into small group, I want to ask you a few questions to see if you understand a little more now.
Question 1:
Is Jesus God? Yes
Question 2:
Is the Holy Spirit God? Yes
Question 3:
Is The Father God? Yes
Question 4:
The Trinity is one God in three distinct persons. True or False? True
Question 5:
Is Jesus an angel? no
There are a lot of things in the Bible that are hard to understand, and that is because our God is a huge God! He is so great, He goes beyond our comprehension in so many things! And what’s crazier is He wants to know you and for you to know Him!
End in prayer
