Intro: Last week in part one of “That Blessed Hope” we left off with the disciples standing on the Mount of Olives and looking into the heavens as Jesus ascended.
Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
The New Testament church heard, believed and embraced the doctrine of an imminent return and so should we. If you recall last week we looked at the promise given in Genesis of Christ bruising the head of Satan. We looked an Enoch being 7th from Adam and prophesying, as well as other Old Testament prophets. We looked at the angels proclamation to Mary as she found out that she was going to have a baby knowing not a man. We began last week with this doctrine being heard, recieved and embraced by the New Testament church and I would like us today to just off from that spot again.
For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
We would all agree that His body was broken, and that His blood was shed for the remission of sin.
However, this is not complete in fulness until,
But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.
His disciples are still waiting for this day… It is why they asked in Acts,
When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
They were waiting with great anticipation for the Kingdom!
This is again taught through the apostle Paul when he recieved of the Lord that which also he delivered the church in Corinth.
For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.
As much as our taking of communion is a reflection upon what He did for us, it should also be a reminder of the hope that lies in wait! Christ is coming back!
Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.
The fact that our Lord is returning should give us great hope! It is the hope that Paul comforted the saints in Thessalonica with!
But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.
And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.
When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.
Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ:
But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.
Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,
Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh.
What else do we need but the divine revelation of His word! If we embrace it, it is the BLESSED HOPE of the saints!
Now, let’s look at that day!
Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.
When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:
The question of His deity will be laid the rest for all will see Him as He is! At His appearing will any refuse to honor Him, or withhold in forms of worship and adoration?
That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.
When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.
I will greatly rejoice in the Lord,
My soul shall be joyful in my God;
For he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation,
He hath covered me with the robe of righteousness,
As a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments,
And as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.
He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.
Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;
And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?
