Waiting on God

Psalm 40
Psalm 40:1–5 NKJV
1 I waited patiently for the Lord; And He inclined to me, And heard my cry. 2 He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, Out of the miry clay, And set my feet upon a rock, And established my steps. 3 He has put a new song in my mouth— Praise to our God; Many will see it and fear, And will trust in the Lord. 4 Blessed is that man who makes the Lord his trust, And does not respect the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies. 5 Many, O Lord my God, are Your wonderful works Which You have done; And Your thoughts toward us Cannot be recounted to You in order; If I would declare and speak of them, They are more than can be numbered.
Intro: Last week we look Mat 7:7-8
Matthew 7:7–8 NKJV
7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.
This my verse for the year. I want this to be my life verse.
I want tot spend time. Asking, Seeking, knocking.
I need to ask God to show me the direction He wants me to go.
I need to seek answers from God.
I need to knock so that door will be opened.
You need to do to same.
But I also know this means waiting.
Waiting is not fun.
But you and I know that God will bless us for waiting.
If asked how does God bless you?
There would be all kinds of answers.
But, very few would answer, I’ve been blessed by God, by waiting on God.

Crying out to God. VS1

VS 1
Psalm 40:1 NKJV
1 I waited patiently for the Lord; And He inclined to me, And heard my cry.
I waited patiently: That term is I waited and waited and waited.
If we are honest with ourselves. We may need to say, “I’ve waited Lord, but not very patiently”
David had prayed. David had waited.
We pray, we wait, but do we do so patiently?
When you wait patiently on the Lord, it means you trust His timing.
Exalting Jesus in Psalms 1–50 He Will Hear You When You Call (40:1)

Adrian Rogers often said, “God is never early and he is never late; he is always right on time.

b. In our lives there things we have to wait patiently on. Elab
Answers when you ask.
A clear vision when you seek.
The door to be opened when you knock.
c. What to we do?
Keep asking.
Keep seeking.
Keep knocking.
Psalm 33:20–22 NKJV
20 Our soul waits for the Lord; He is our help and our shield. 21 For our heart shall rejoice in Him, Because we have trusted in His holy name. 22 Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us, Just as we hope in You.
d. Like David we need to pray unto the Lord.
David prayed, David waited. God heard him.
“He inclined unto me, and heard my cry:”
Inclined: Stretch out.
God hears, but isn’t in a hurry. We are.
Cry: Hallowing, cry for help.
e. Song “Cry to Jesus”
f. As a country; as a church, as a Christian.

Blessings from God. VS 2-5

VS 2
Psalm 40:2 NKJV
2 He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, Out of the miry clay, And set my feet upon a rock, And established my steps.
He brought me up: To reach down and bring up.
Matthew 14:30–31 NKJV
30 But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” 31 And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”
Horrible pit: Tumult and destruction.
Out of the miry clay: Slippery slim, mud pit.
1. through all the tumult, the destruction. Through what seems to be the down slide in life. We have something great.
a. We have a firm foundation.
And set my feet upon a rock: A rock here is a firm foundation,
b. Our foundation is not in person.
c. What is in God’s word is our foundation.
d. established my goings:
e. He steady’s our steps. God’s will show us the way.
f. God will show us the way. He will show what you need to do in life.
He will show you what you need to do when it comes to serving Him.
He will show you what you need to do in giving.
He will show you what to not do, or what to not say.
But it is still up to us to follow what the Lord had showed us.
Hymn: :Where ever He led’s I’ll go.
VS 3
Psalm 40:3 (NKJV)
3 He has put a new song in my mouth— Praise to our God; Many will see it and fear, And will trust in the Lord.
“He has put a new song in my mouth— Praise to our God;”
1. When we are down and out, when all looks dim and dark, when it seems like we have nothing to sing about.
a. The way God shows us that he is in control of all things may be different, but it has the same results.
b. When things seem to be at its’ worst is when God shows his best.
We as believers, followers of Jesus, sing praises unto God. (Even in bad times. Paul and Silas)
c. The Lord may pull us out of the horrible pit, but the situation that got us there may still be the same.
But the down and out feeling we have will be lifted and we can sing praise to the lord.
“Many will see it and fear, And will trust in the Lord.”
1. What will they see? The joy in our heart.
They will see peace in our life, they will see that no matter what we will trust the Lord.
a. They people the lost world. see believers with joy
See with peace, and if their hearts are not hard (elab) they fear (reverence, praise) too.
b. We need to remember that it may not happen right away. Back to VS 1
VS 4
Psalm 40:4 (NKJV)
4 Blessed is that man who makes the Lord his trust, And does not respect the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.
“Blessed is that man who makes the Lord his trust”
Psalm 40:4 (AMP)
4 Blessed (happy, fortunate, to be envied) is the man who makes the Lord his refuge and trust, and turns not to the proud or to followers of false gods.
Blessed: Happiness.
1. You can be happy in the Lord.
a. You can be as poor as the widow that gave her last two mites. Elab
b. You can be as sick as the women with the issue of blood. Elab
c. You can be as miserable as Jonah. Ealb
d. You can live in a day and we do live in a day where wickiness is all around us and still be blessed in the Lord
And does not respect the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.
Respect: Hebrew word: “Panah”: To turn to.
Proud: Defiant. “followers of false gods”
The proud, the defiant, whether it’s a politician, or religious man’ or a business man. They will tell lies to get your vote or to get your money, your friendship.
f. John 8:44
John 8:44 NKJV
44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.
g. Why are so many people turning to the lies of the proud?
h. There are many reasons. Elab on some. But I believe one of the biggest reason, money.
1 Timothy 6:10 NKJV
10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
VS 5
Psalm 40:5 (NKJV)
5 Many, O Lord my God, are Your wonderful works Which You have done; And Your thoughts toward us Cannot be recounted to You in order; If I would declare and speak of them, They are more than can be numbered.
Psalm 40:5 (AMP)
5 Many, O Lord my God, are the wonderful works which You have done, and Your thoughts toward us; no one can compare with You! If I should declare and speak of them, they are too many to be numbered.
Many: Abundant.
wonderful works: Extraordinary.
1. When we are in the horrible pit, the miry clay, remember the wonderful words the Lord has done.
a. Look for the wonderful the Lord will do.
b. Focus on the wonderful works the Lord had done for you. Search God’s word and see what He has done, and remember God does not change.
“And Your thoughts towards us”
Think this, the Lords thoughts toward us.
“ no one can compare with You”
“If I should declare and speak of them, they are too many to be numbered.”
What he is saying here is that the Lord had done so many wonders for him, he could not number all of them.
CLOSE: As I said we are in a difficult day in our country. A day of wickedness, a day of division, a day where it seems like there is no hope. But there is hope, not hope in man, but the hope of assurance in the resurrected man.
