“Chapter 10:1-12”
“Chapter 10:1-12”
welcome church
talk about being back in Luke
recap =
Ch. 9 starts off with Jesus sending out the 12 disciples
upon the arrival of the disciples we find out they sort of had a graduation if you will = come back apostles
now after they returned Jesus tried to take them to a desolate place where they could rest and be alone but they ran into the crowed = feeding the 5,000 or 10,000
Jesus reveals who he is to the apostles
Jesus foretells his death
he then talks about what it means to follow him = pick up your cross daily = there is an urgency now, Jesus’ eyes are now set on Jerusalem
the chapter then ends with Jesus letting his disciples know the true cost of following him, that it will require us to be willing to abandon everything for him……
Ch. 9 had both physical victory (over the 5 loaves and 2 fish) and spiritual victory as Jesus casted out an unclean spirit from the young boy.
we traveled with Jesus as we saw a man on a mission to spread the message of his father the good news, the gospel
and now his face has turned towards Jerusalem as he begins the final journey to the cross
and now chapter 10 begins very similar as Jesus is getting ready to send out not just 12 but 72 to further his message
jump in and read passage = have everyone stand
After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go. And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. Go your way; behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. Carry no moneybag, no knapsack, no sandals, and greet no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house!’ And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him. But if not, it will return to you. And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the laborer deserves his wages. Do not go from house to house. Whenever you enter a town and they receive you, eat what is set before you. Heal the sick in it and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ But whenever you enter a town and they do not receive you, go into its streets and say, ‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this, that the kingdom of God has come near.’ I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.
“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. But it will be more bearable in the judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you. And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You shall be brought down to Hades.
“The one who hears you hears me, and the one who rejects you rejects me, and the one who rejects me rejects him who sent me.”
(a lot in just that last little verse right there)
Ch. 10 looks a lot like Ch. 9 = speak on this
i am going to have 4 points today
we are not going to necessarily go verse by verse but we will expound on a few
lets begin with Vv. 1-2
Point 1 = Pray
Point 1 = Pray
break this down
so at the very beginning we know jesus already sent out the 12 now jesus is sending out 72,
The number “72” is found in the earliest Greek manuscripts. This number is significant for it was, according to Genesis 10, the traditional number of nations in the world, according to the Septuagint.
Other Greek manuscripts read “70.” This alternative reading may have been influenced by the Hebrew Old Testament, which lists seventy names in Genesis 10.
By choosing and sending out seventy-two disciples, Jesus was symbolically showing that all nations in the world would one day hear the message.
This would include the Gentiles—an important point for Luke’s Gentile audience.
Far more than twelve people had been following Jesus. According to 1 Corinthians 15:6 “Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep.” ,
Jesus had at least five hundred followers by the time he had finished his ministry.
Even though Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem, knowing that death awaited him there, he did not stop his ministry of proclaiming the kingdom of God.
and now he was preparing the 72 much like the 12 we see Jesus instruct them with this, PRAY
Before going, we must pray! Many think they can go without praying. This leads to failure and defeat.
we have talked about this many times already but if the bible presents it multiples times it must be important, Start off our day in Prayer to receive guidance = be lead in what God wants for us
here Jesus paints a beautiful picture and compares the people to a harvest
although jesus is sending out 36 teams, 72 in total, he is letting them know that there is a lot of worker to be done, a lot of people to hear the gospel, and know enough people willing to spread the gospel
In Christian service, there is no unemployment. God has work enough for everyone. No believer should sit back and watch others work because the harvest is great.
in 2024 I want to make sure that Sovereign Heights is not only praying for more laborers but that we to be laborers in spreading the good news to ALL who are willing to hear it.
lets move on to vv. 3-6
Point 2. GO
Point 2. GO
Here in Point number 2 we see Jesus instructing the 12 to GO
and in doing so he is telling them something important here, GO and be dependent on him
talk about not bringing anything, similar to the 12, they must be dependent on him
not so much about what they have, but rather the message they are bringing
in our lives we can look at the things we have, qualifications, our status, number of followers, and be dependent on that rather than allowing God to guid us
speak on importance of knowing the Gospel = faith grows and our confidence in sharing grows……our point here at Sovereign Heights
Now lets look at some interesting points real quick
1st Jesus is instructing the 72 to be meek = Lambs amongst wolves = preach on this
Jesus warned against opposition.
Wolfish opposition comes in many forms.
Some spiritual opponents will aggressively attack all religion, especially religion that respects patience, meekness, and chastity.
Some opponents will appear to be spiritual, even more than you are.
Serving God today requires courage under fire and discernment among counterfeits.
Pray for growth in both virtues. Find a way to become better educated about the opposition you face.
2nd be dependent = just talked about this but again not about what we have in earthly resources but rather the message we are sharing
3rd Be diligent = talk on this one,
Jesus knows his days are numbered and theres an urgency to get the message out to as many as they can, and I think that same thing applies today
mega churches = more about a social event than actually sharing the Gospel and i think Jesus wants us to get to work and start spreading the news…
4th Be Ready!! come in peace (maybe joke about aliens) = Speak on this
and when you find the house that receives you, Stay
Point 3. Stay
Point 3. Stay
And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the laborer deserves his wages. Do not go from house to house. Whenever you enter a town and they receive you, eat what is set before you. Heal the sick in it and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’
Jesus had also directed the Twelve to remain with their original hosts in any town (9:4).
This instruction avoided certain problems.
For the two disciples to move about from house to house could offend the families who first took them in.
Some families might begin to compete for the disciples’ presence, and some might think they weren’t good enough to hear their message.
This instruction would also keep them (Disciples) from sin caused by always looking for a better deal.
If the disciples appeared not to appreciate the hospitality offered them, the town might not accept Jesus when he followed them there.
In addition, by staying in one place, the disciples would not have to worry continually about getting good accommodations. They could settle down and do their appointed task.
How do we apply this to us? i think when we read this it can be as simple as never make some one feel undeserving = preach on this
Concluding
But whenever you enter a town and they do not receive you, go into its streets and say, ‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you.
Point 4. Leave in Peace
Point 4. Leave in Peace
remember we learned this in the sending of the 12 talk about the dusting of feet in connection to dusting off when leaving an unclean town (gentile town or region) this is the same
I think the whole point here is whats found in verse 16
I think this passage and todays message is a great instruction on how to share the Gospel
not coincidence = Godincedence
Preach it
Historical context to relate to them
The mention of cities that might reject the Messiah (10:10–11) leads to a message of those who already had.
Chorazin (also spelled Korazin) and Bethsaida were cities near Capernaum, at the north end of the Sea of Galilee.
Jesus had concentrated his ministry in and around Capernaum, so he must have performed miracles in these cities (deeds of power).
and they still chose not too receive him
all while Tyre and Sidon pagan cities didn't have that chance but he is saying that if he did go to them, they would have repented
you'll notice that in going out to do Gods work, spreading the good news, your biggest opposition will be other “christians” who come at you more then the ones who are not
nonetheless leave in peace, dont take it personal, dont let it take you down
don’t force yourself upon them. Those who reject will be punished by the Lord.
God has called all Christians to do His work John 15:16
You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.
All are called, but few answer this call.
Following Christ means that we live like He lived. Talk like He talked. Pray like He prayed.
Are you willing to follow the Lord all the way?
Preach
HOLY SPIRIT TAKE OVER……
