3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.
4 For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office:
5 So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.
6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith;
7 Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching;
8 Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.
I Corinthians 12
We are one body, many members.
We each have different abilities, talents and functions that are God given.
One of the most important things we can do is find out who we are in the body and fulfill our purpose!
The bible gives three categories of gifts.
Gifts of Service:
Prophecy: Speaking under divine anointing to edify others including; testimony, proclamation and preaching.
Ministry: service to others.
Teaching: instruction and training
Exhortation: encouragement and comfort
Giving: sharing material and monetary blessings
Leading: providing direction, guidance and influence
Showing mercy: being merciful and kind
Gifts of Leadership:
Romans 12 deals with abilities and functions.
Ephesians 4 deals with offices and authority.
Leaders inspire, motivate, disciple, instruct, and train members of the body so that all are productive.
Whole body is built up - church functions effectively, is established in truth, grows in maturity.
Gifts of the Spirit or Spiritual Gifts
I Corinthians 12 we find nine supernatural gifts that are a result of the direct operation of the Holy Ghost.
Word of wisdom: special insight, judgement or guidance for a particular need.
Word of knowledge: divine information for a specific need.
Faith: ability to trust God and inspire other to trust for a specific need or circumstance.
Gift of healing: various forms of miraculous cure or restoration from illness, diseases, injuries or other impairments.
Working of miracles: direct intervention of God to circumvent what is natural law.
Prophecy: utterance from God through an individual.
Discerning of spirits: ability to know the motivations of the human spirit and know what demonic spirit is at work.
Different kinds of tongues: utterance in one or more languages unknown to the speaker.
Interpretation of tongues: ability to translate or explain the meaning of the public utterance in tongues.
These things (and the other two categories) defined the early church!
43 And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.
3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;
4 God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?
The Operation of the Spiritual Gifts
The source is God - supernatural power
4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.
6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.
7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
God is the dispenser of all gifts…
Key is willingness and submission.
It is God’s will for these gifts to be in operation in EVERY church.
2 Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:
7 So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ:
Seek and not despise them.
31 But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.
39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
A healthy, fully functioning church desires all gifts for His body!
Potentially, EVERY Holy Ghost filled believer can operate in EVERY spritual gift as needed.
You have to live in submission, be sensitive, have faith and humility.
The focus is always God and the church…
The Gifts do NOT replace personal study, prayer, relationship.
They do not establish doctrine or replace leadership.
33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.
All gifts operate from love.
31 But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.
What is the “more excellent way?”
Chapter 13… LOVE
Operation of the Gifts are not a sign of maturity or spirituality.
Remember Balam’s donkey!
Conclusion:
Please note:
God is infallible, people are not!
Prophecy is to be judged (1 Corinthians 14:29)
Tongues and Interpretation MUST be done in order AND judged
God does not answer every prayer.
We should earnestly desire the All the gifts!
20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,
You have never been used in the Gifts of the spirit?
What power is working in you?
