And take thou unto thee Aaron thy brother, and his sons with him, from among the children of Israel, that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office, even Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron’s sons.
Intro: The role of a high priest should not be confused with the role of a prophet. Although both men are called of God there differences could be said like this, a prophet works on behalf of God towards man, and a priest works on behalf of man towards God. Aaron the brother of Moses and first high priest for the nation of Israel was a type of our Lord Jesus Christ. That being said their are differences between the mortal priesthood and immortal priesthood. Mainly this, that Aaron’s priesthood ended with death, while Christ’s enter into His role as our spiritual High Priest after His death.
Paul describes the office of the high priest as being taken from among men, ordained for men in things pertaining to God. His gifts and sacrifices were offered for the sins of man and he was to perform his duties while showing compassion on the ignorant as well as for those who are out of the way.
Aaron was of the tribe of _______________.
Christ was of the tribe of _______________.
Aaron was a priest after the order of mortal men.
Christ was a priest after the order of __________________.
Melchisedec was king of Salem, priest of the most high God, he is King of peace, without father and without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life. This is why Melchisedec can’t be anyone but a preincarnate Christ.
For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him; To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace; Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually. Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils.
Aaron was a priest on earth of an earthly Tabernacle.
Christ was never a priest on earth...
For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law:
Aaron ceased to be a priest when he died.
Christ became a priest only after He died.
So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.
This is Old Testament fulfilment from Psalm 2, here God applies the priesthood of Christ to His resurrection.
God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.
The Bible teaches that Christ was made high priest the day He was begotten of the Father. The day He was begotten was the day He was raised from the dead, He was begotten by and through His resurrection and therefore He became a high priest by and through His resurrection from the dead. This is important because it was shown through the actions of Aaron on the day of atonement.
For it was only after the death of the lamb, and after the blood was all poured out that Aaron took the blood in the bason, went in through the vail into the most holy place to apply that blood to the mercy seat.
And so Christ, after leaving the place of His death, after all of His blood had been poured out, He took the bason filled with His own blood and with the vail now rent from top to bottom, He entered into that Most Holy Place in heaven and applied His blood to the mercy seat which is the throne of God!
Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:
Aaron’s action was for the people in the earthly Tabernacle.
Christ’s action is on behalf of the people in the heavenly Tabernacle.
Aaron went in to the most holy place with sacrificial blood on behalf of Israel and the bore witness that the sacrifice had been made for them.
Our Lord entered in the the Most Holy Place, in heaven, with His own blood and then appeared before the people a resurrected Saviour, which was the witness that the sacrifice had been made for them!
Closing; As the brazen altar fulfilled the requirements of the Ark of the Covenant which were against the people. So was the cross of Christ the answer to the demands placed upon and against us by the throne of a holy and just God.
